VIN Report for selling my other bike....'scam'?
« on: October 05, 2016, 11:06:57 AM »
I have an ad on Craigslist to sell my '09 HD Roadglide.  I get a response back from a guy who starts out asking about tread on the tires and then if I had a VIN report on the bike.  I said no I didn't have a VIN report since I bought from a dealer where I traded in my previous HD.  He then suggested a site called "detectvin.com" to get a VIN report, supposedly cheaper than carfax.

Has anyone ever heard about detectvin.com?  I'm concerned about giving my  credit card to this online service that I've never heard about.  I"m thinking this is just another CL scam in progress.  Opinions?

If wanted to check your VIN to see if it was stolen or if it was a salvage title all he would have to do is call his local DMV.
Like Jerry said let him do the legwork if he wants to.

Yup, craiglist con artist.

Like others already said, state patrol will run any vin if ya call the numbers in.

I wouldn't trust a third party website to even have such info.

Just recently had my CBR on Craigslist and was approached by a supposedly interested individual, (a woman with a latino name) requesting a report from a place other (cheaper was the claim) than Carfax. The deal was that she would reimburse me for the
report if it was clear. I can't remember what the name of the company was, but
there wasn't a lot of information about it. Googled In New York City. I told the person I didn't give out information concerning
my vehicles, like vin numbers on the internet. I thought it smelled like fish too.

UPDATE:

So I replied to the last request for a VIN check using detectvin.com telling the "buyer" that I would not give out my info to a site that had no reviews.  Seems like that did the trick.  No more interest from the prospective "buyer'.

Thanks guys for confirming my suspicions.  Smelled like fish to me.  Trust your gut.

After a second look, that IS the same place the "interested party" for my bike wanted me to go thru. Glad I didn't.
The name used from the response to the ad I got was something like " Deloris Martinez"

Ask them for their bank routing number and account number...  if they want to identify themselves by sending a copy of their Drivers License then maybe I would consider giving them a vin to run...
Just like you sell a bike, they can do so if they hand me the cash for it before doing so.  I can demonstrate before hand but no free rides with potential wrecks.  The auto dealers required you to surrender you Drivers License years ago to do a test drive.  Or that and they rode along.  I once test drove a Fiero GT for kicks and it was in the mountains of NC and I grew up in the mountains...  He chose the road we were going on and I scared him enough he asked me to slow down...he didn't like that I would not slow down much for curves and would accelerate out of the turns.  The white knuckles as we entered the first and second curve gave me a warning that was to come.   No sense of adventure or trust apparently of the tires they put on it.  It was the v6 version, not the slower 4 cylinder.
It was entertaining but an odd car with some serious cockpit egonomic issues and legroom wasn't great.

Too many things that made it feel and look like a kit car.  Although the Testarossa body kit for them was hilarious.
