Lightweight Rear

It's been discussed but has anyone actually used a front hub for a rear wheel with small disc? I'm curious about the final weight of this wheel setup.

I'm going to eventually use a dirt track billet quick change hub with small disc for mine. Hub without bearings doesn't weigh much more than just the sprocket carrier on a 750. Will need to make a bearing carrier for the sprocket but that's no biggie.

Hi Brent,

Yes I did. Pictures show my starting point. Sadly no pic from end result. Sold the wheel because I wanted and still use cast wheels. Do not know exact weight either.

seen quite few like rob's when i started racing, the older guys told me it was common practice back in the day with sohcs. but havent seen one last few years... most hwire wheel people seem to go with motocross rear hubs

make sure that you add a separate bearing for the sporcket....

Thanks Rob, good to hear from you, do you remember what disc that was? I would look for as small a rotor as possible. I don't use the rear brake now unless I needed some stability, not for braking power because it was useless!

It would be great to know weights before sourcing parts. Certainly the hub etc will be much lighter but add a rotor, master cylinder, etc. how much less.

TG, any of those hubs use a disc rotor pre 78? I'm looking for one but no luck, maybe I'll just stick to a drum.

As much as I like my WM shouldered rims, I would lace up an MT rim instead & run tubeless eliminating an extra 1.5 lbs also.

Disc and rotor carrier..aka..sideplates..
Huge selection of offsets and sprocket, rotors etc acvailable for dirttrack hubs, if you get lucky you can find used ones. Look for quick change barnes wheels ,Cheney, A&A,Kosman etc, and others, some show up used in dragracing parts, often they do not use knockoff portion, they just bolt them on.

You can skim the material between the spoke hubs to remove a bit of material without affecting the weight much but the looks a lot...
Dual pot Honda caliper could provide enough braking without massive amount...they work well with sinistered pads.  Would be an inexpensive rout. Can weigh a caliper for you as I have one I am working on...
I like Vox's setup, unconventional but the spoke lacing could be a pain on wider rim...lots of dish on one side... Would a Harley front hub be usable on the rear given its wider spacing...?
Different twist on the idea.  Is front 750 hub wider?  How modern a hub can you use?

Would a rear period alloy be out of the equation... I know, not as attractive as spoked but it could solve some of the issues if you can find a set to give you the width needed.  How much room do you have to play with on your rear swing arm and still have things aligned for sprockets, etc.  Don't want to "solve" one issue and create another.

i never used the rear brake either so made them from alloy and had them anodised , saved quite a lot of weight and you could still use it to get yourself out of trouble in an emergency .

This was one of my early setups. the sprocket carrier and the disk, from Brembo as used on Voxan, Ducati, where lightened. Disk diametre was 240m/m. Used a caliper from brembo used on scooters.Had a WM5(3.00")rim laced to it.
