breather tube

 if i disconect the breather tube running from the top of the engine to the airbox would it make a difference how the engine runs? will it effect the idle? any ideas? the bike is a 76 cb55k

The breather tube is where the moisture exits the engine when up to temperature (see other posts). It also vents any excess crankcase pressure to the outside world.

It's connected to the airbox cos the government said we must recycle oil and gasses.  Removing the tube won't affect performance, but you may get the odd speck of oil on the engine (depends on the state of your rings and bores).

thanks steve, but it should not efect the performance of the engine? the bike is a 1976 so it doesn't really need the emissions to pass spec in new york state,at least they never check.

You can route the hose down to where the carb overflow hoses are or get a crankcase vent filter to connect to end of the tube.The only way it would make a performance difference is if the tube was clogged due to dirt as the pressure from the motor would have to find another way to exit ie. seals or gaskets.

For both aesthetics and cleanliness, I mount a small filter.  K&N and other filter makers produce them.  I actually bought a bunch from a guy who always has them on eBay (not K&N's) for low money.  Here is a link -
