73 CB750 Rear Sprocket Side Plate
«

On the 73 CB750, there is a Sprocket Side Plate (pt # 41211-341-000) bolted to the rear sprocket by the four hub nuts, which already have locking tabs on them. Can anyone tell me why this side plate is there?
The part is shown on the fiche (link below) as ref# 002.

I appreciate any and all feedback.

It is supposed to catch a chain that slips off the sprocket, I think.

It is to help remove the rear wheel without breaking the chain or having to remove the exhaust pipes.
In theory, you push the wheel forward, put the chain on the side plate, then you can move the wheel far enough back to come out of the swingarm.

It keeps the chain from getting jammed up on the sprocket nuts, while removing wheel.. If you are using a master link, not really needed.

I never knew the actual purpose of that plate. I kept mine on, but I know a lot of folks just bolt right to the sprocket and skip the plate. Related... locking tabs are hard to find (cheap) for the four sprocket nuts... most here use serrated flanged lock nuts or nylocks or something similar.
