How does an oil filter work?
« on: December 23, 2016, 01:24:37 PM »
Silly question, but I'm troubleshooting a problem on one of my bikes that really bothers me.

I unscrewed the oil filter and discovered that it hasn't ever had oil in it - the filter was bone dry.

So I would like to backtrack the route the oil takes to get to it.

I have to add, because I'm sure the question will come up - yes, the engine is getting oil.

The path the oil takes from the pump varies on different bikes. Usually, the oil filter is right behind the crank bearings.
Some oil filters have a safety valve which bypasses the filter element if it is clogged. It could be that you have filter with a malfunctioning safety and the oil never went trhough the filter element.

I'll check the bypass then - thanks I didn't even know the oil filter had something like that.

If it's got an oil cooler...don't some of the sandwich plates also have a bypass of their own in the event of a restriction?

I know you've asked twice.

This is a Nighthawk.  It does have an oil cooler - in frame routing.

Definitely need to completely flush the engine and frame.  Dismount the oil cooler and flush it out as well.

I think it ate a pine needle (or two).
