An Ugly bike thread
« on: December 23, 2016, 07:44:01 PM »
Not abominations.  I think we can all agree that abominations inspire ridicule, laughter, but not disappointment or anger.

I'd like to start a thread for bikes that inspire disappointment or anger because of what they could have been - had the manufacturer actually sat back and LOOKED at that thing before selling it.

There are 3 that have always inspired disgust in me - simply because they look terrible.  No artistic merit, no style, good bikes by all rights - but man that ugly stick whacked them up the side of the head.

1) Kawasaki Ninja 500R
Uhgg.  I see these bikes all over the place around where I live.  They must be good bikes, because they get plenty of use.  But geeze.  Looks decent from the side, looks decent from the rear, looks like it was hit with a scoop shovel from the front.  This is the bike you convert to a street fighter specifically to ditch the fairing.

2)  BMW R1200GS
I own one of these bikes, and perhaps this can be written off on the newer models but it seems like BMW went out of their way to make a bike that had zero styling and class.  Functionally - wonderful, does everything you need from it.  Stylistically - elegance is not a word the Germans must embrace because this bike has none.  Bars and engine parts sticking out all over the place.  That boxer engine juts out, getting in the way of your boots, banging into your shins, just daring something to smash into the valve cover and leave you stranded.

3)  KTM 950 Adventure
Completely opposite from the BMW is the KTM.  This bike is ALL plastic and no engine.  How many fairing parts do you have to remove in order to even see the engine?  To make it even more obvious the fairings are hunter orange.  No mistaking this bike for a deer when looking through the rifle scope.  You might mistake it for an alien invasion fleet though.  The front of that bike has Anime written all over it.  The Japanese called, they want their cartoons back.

None of this makes me hate these bikes - heck I own one!  But again, I really wish I could have been on that design team before they decided to ship them.

I had never heard of a Rotary.  My god, those side reflectors are hideous - what were they thinking?
