Another thread I was reading had me wondering if there already existed a thread (that I couldn't find) or if such a thread would be useful for people to post pics of bikes they either just bought or sold, along with what they went for so as to give people a decent indication of what they ought to consider asking or paying. I just bought a 1978 CB750K with 11,000 miles, good paint, good motor, clogged carbs (but it started and let me nurse it home), some light rust on some of the chrome, old tires that needed replaced, no original exhaust, both side covers present but cracked, airbox present, clean tank, essentially stock except the exhaust for $1500. I haven't read how to post pictures yet, but if this thread has merit (or I'm pointed to the existing thread) I'll get them up when I can. I'm content with the $1500 I paid, (and another $200 for new tires) whether it was a good deal, about right or too much, but its a datapoint for anyone out there. Sale was in Indianapolis.

$1500 sounds totally reasonable.
Transaction price is really dependent on a number of factors.  (Area, saturation, buyers, time of year....etc. )
A titled bike with your description might go for $2500-$3000 here (PNW) in the summer.

There are a few members who picked up bikes dirt cheap.  Myself included.

$0
$50
$100

Bloo was $100.  Mostly original, emotionally molested, 18,000 miles.  Motor turned, carbs sticking, 4into1 pipe rotted, brake mc seized, tires aged out.

I think this is a very good idea. If I did not know better I thought you were describing my bike. That is a 1978 750K black all stock but the 4 into 2 with no guts inside (sounds good). Stock air box & carbs. Had been sitting for six years in a good clean barn. A friend wanted me to get it running but thought $200.00 was more than the bike was worth. He ask me if I would buy it as is for $100.00. I said no and gave him $200.00. I cleaned up the carbs oiled up the walls a few other things and it has run great ever sense. Thanks to Hondaman and all his magic parts. I can't say enough about how good the quality of his stuff is. Anyway I hope this thread continues. $100.00 or $200.00 for a bike in this shape does not happen very often I was just in the right place at the right time.

Not a bad idea, but those of us who do some buying and selling know the true gems are the freebies and cheapies. Just got a '75 KZ400 in excellent shape for free from a friend, and I got my Cb160 for $100 about 10 years ago. Because of this, maybe another good indicator of price is "how fast I got off my ass once I saw it on craigslist and got to it before anyone else did." I saw that 160 on CL, called, and was there in 45 minutes. In the time that I called, the guy said he had 20 more calls, but I was there first.

Looking up past sold bikes on Ebay-- sold, not just completed listings -- will give you a rough idea as well, although it too can be area specific. Ebay prices tend to me more than CL or in-person prices by what I would guess at 10-30%, maybe more. Bigger market, but also fees...

I got my '78 CB550 K4 in New Jersey for $1200. Looking back at it it needed a lot of work. Worst part was a broken tranny gear. But it had under 12k miles.
10/2013

Also bought an '82 CB650 for, I think, $300 for just the motor which had less than 9k miles on it.

I've bought a lot of bikes cheap. My numbers wouldn't help.

I sold a 76F with 10 K miles for $2500 a couple years ago. For a while it was on the Mecum Auction list, can't find it now.

My first SOHC/4. 1978 CB 550K4

Was sitting in a back alley in Calgary Alberta for about 26 years.

Picked it up summer of 2016 for $200 CDN pesos.

Fairly complete, and appears low milage (missing alternator parts, and speedo, beat up headlight, ratty seat, etc).

You can check the Mecum results by entering your email. Some Hondas brought good money at Vegas. I believe a 71 750 went for 15K and a 69 sandcast brought 28K.

'78 750k.  $150.00 2 years ago.  It runs now but I haven't had the heart to destroy the vintage graphics, just replaced the tank and side covers with others and hung these on the wall.  mileage unknown, condition, poor!

I bought my '74 CB750, going on two years ago, from a local guy for $250 that was on craigslist. The engine was frozen, no carbs, no oil tank, no engine side covers, missing electrics and key components, etc., etc. Now, it runs like a champ after I freed up the engine, put a set of semi-rebuilt carbs on, wiring and handlebar switches and whatever else it was missing. I don't know what I spent to get to this point but I don't think I have done too bad !  8)

Also, bought my 1973 CB500 a year ago, Jan 2016, for $600. Not running and sat for 20 years untouched gathering dust in a farm building (not a barn  ::) ). I got it running, new points and plugs, 1974 CB550 tank, added a 4 into 1, got rid of the hideous high bars, etc., etc..

I sold my fully resto'ed 1978 K8 in Spring 2016 for $2200 (after 4 years of work on it). The new owner took it to his rented garage to park it that day, and his landlord, who had an identical one in his college years, talked the new owner out of it, for a small profit (it had just 14 miles on it). So, the former new owner just called me, decided he next wants to buy my F0 when I finish it this Spring! He might need a different garage, though, if he wants to keep it? :)
