Island Classic 2017 aboard the HULK CB1200
« on: February 02, 2017, 11:20:19 pm »
So another Island Classic has come a gone.

The bike was flawless all weekend. We did P1 qualifying with a 1:49,5 time (as fast as we've been the year before)

First race saturday we won and dropped into the low 1:48s

Second race saturday Corey crashed and did a bit of damage to the ignition etc but we got it fixed and going again

Third race sunday we won again in the low 1:48s

Fourth race sunday we won and dropped into the 1:47s. Very happy with the result and how the bike worked. Running out of mods to do apart from a new frame haha but thats another story.

The bike was the fastest down the speed traps, hitting 235km/h. Dean was the winner (#88) with his immaculate CR750 replica race bike

Enjoy:
Race 1:

Race 3:

Race 4:

If anyone can help to get the videos directly on here, I would appreciate.

Ours is Period 4 1963-72
IC is Period 5 (for Australian bikes) which is 1973-82

We can run Methanol, they can only run petrol

We are limited in carb size

We run a 130 cut 18" rear tyre, they run a 17" 180 slick
We run a cut 18" front tyre they run 17" slick

They have better suspension options front and rear

Tyre and chassis technology makes most of the difference.

Front bikes have around 50whp on our bike and trap 270km/h+ against our 230+

thanks for the explanation , i can see why there is such a difference in lap times now .

to be honest im not sure if a bike is a classic if it has a 180 slick tyre in the back

Simon,

I agree but modern rubber is cheaper and longer lasting. The tyres for the CB last very little and cost more than a super nice slick.

Big tyres makes the bikes super fast and you gotta love that! Those big 1300cc four valve beasts coming on to the Phillip Island Straight is a sight to behold.

European Classic racing generally (but not always) has smaller tyres in the rules.

yes in england we have to use a treaded tyre [ 150 max ]   and no 4 valve engines . the two fastest british bikes at pi were yamaha fj1100 based
the isle of man has different rules and for some reason you can use suzuki oil cooled 4 valve engines
i do take your point about the cost of treaded tyres though i can buy a pair of slicks for a third of the price of a pair of avons

Thanks for the vids & well done.

Classic Dunlops are rocking horse #$%* here, not sure they're even being produced? The price of Avons will likely continue to increase....bloody thievery!

Can you get Heidenau's? Every bit as good as Avons but cheaper.

A lot of smaller displacement bikes run on Heidenau's here but I don't see any larger bikes. Do you use them? They seem to me to have a funny contour without an apparent tread edge, but I'm all ears.

Congratulations, the videos demonstrated the superior power your bike had on the other bikes in the race in the distances you were able to create coming out of a corner with #88  on your six within 1-2 bike lengths.  Apparently his bike was lighter given his ability to close the gap in many turns from hundreds of feet (10s of meters) to a bike length or two.

I ran them for years on my 350 K4 and also run them on my 840 Honda. Due to health issues (and the ACU refusing my licence application) I only raced the big Honda in anger at one meeting but I won both races on a tight and twisty track (3 Sisters) which Avon themselves stated is the hardest track on tyres in the UK, possibly Europe.  This was when I complained to them about completely destroying one of their front AM26 race tyre in around 18 miles at 3 Sisters - this was on the 350 as well. I am fighting to try and get a licence for this year but, if I do, I will definately go with Heidenau's. Re the contour - you need to look at the different profiles they offer and make sure they are fitted to the correct size rim. A friend ran a rear Heidenau that was different to mine and the profile looked awful - he didn't like it at all. He now runs the same as me and is also happy with them.

Might give those Heidenaus a try but no one uses them at the moment.

Dunlops would be a first choice but none available at not silly prices. I've heard they may return the Dunlops to production soon as their losing heaps of business

Regarding the #88 bike it is extremely well put together and has been honed for many years and still is the bike to beat. We upped our game but sure they will up theirs. Their bike and rider combination is at least 30kg lighter than ours, I would say plus Dean Oughtred (#88) is an unreal rider of classic and modern bikes.

#88 bike was running on Dunlops fyi

And now a redneck display after the last race - frying those Avons:

Good fun!

Was the #88 bike in the 1970 Daytona colours still a 750 ?
Your big 12 showed its muscle on the straights though and what consistent lap times.

You're up early young Brian Bear, oh I forgot, it's summer over there and much to hot to sleep, hahaha.

Hey Uncle Sammy!

From memory Deans bike did not run a Hy-Vo motor, but it was around the 1000cc mark though. 970cc maybe?

It was 46deg C here on Friday. It's killing me. :(

Cheers,
Brian

114.8F Brian, I hope that's during the day and not at night, woweeeee.

We've not had a bad winter here but as you get older and the blood thins and the gas bills go through the roof, yuck.

Spring is round the corner but the worst of winter can come at the end of Feb to the beginning of March here in the UK.
