Correct new sleeve size
« on: February 19, 2017, 08:09:18 am »
Hey all, can anyone tell me the correct size new sleeve material to rebuild handlbar switches? A couple of retailers sell lots of sizes and I have 10 mm but it appears to be too big to fit into the grommet on the back on the speedo and tacho bodies.
Thanks
Al

Am I being clear enough, Im talking about the black shiny sleeve/tube material (harness cover I guess you would call it) that covers the wires from the switches down to the headlight........

I thought the wires passed through the bars between the switch halfs, not sure what you mean by not fitting the switch.if the sleeve will go in the bars aren't you ok?billp

No, oem has a sleeve that I want to replicate. I will try to measure the size of the sleeve on the NOS switch I have that I dont want to use on this bike.....

Sleeve size depends upon the number of wires needed to run inside.
I think it is documented on vintage connections those sizes.
McMaster-Carr sells sleeving of many sizes and types.  You can  squash flat a section of old tubing if it is sacrifised for the measure.  A hairdryer can make the old plastic more pliable or drop it in a cup of the hottest water from tap before trying to squash it. A heat gun or boiling water might be too hot which it could cause the tubing to shrink or stretch.  So, better to err on side of an attempt temp being too cold rather than too hot.  Just my thoughts not knowing how brittle your sleeving is. I am thinking the sleeving is 7 to 8 mm.  But guess from memory. A bit of heat shrink slipped over the end of the sleeving can help secure it so it does not slip down from the ends it was designed to protect.

Sleeves can be found on eBay, from China with free shipping and for not many $. I'm currently waiting for nylon braided flexible sleeves in 3 size ranges to hide wires that look bad when visible, red. Black sleeves will hide them when routed on the frame.
