Where do you get o-rings and gaskets from these days?
« on: February 22, 2017, 04:42:25 AM »
I replaced the cam chain - means I need pretty much everything.  I would prefer one place to buy it from.

Quality is important - like thick enough pucks and such.

So the question is:  where do you buy your o rings and gaskets from?  My local Honda is useless.

As for o rings I just put an order in for a bunch of different useful sizes for our engines, oil lines, carb tees, etc so hopefully I won't need to go searching anymore. They have all the correct metric sizes in buna or viton. If you buy multiple lots you will only be charged a flat $3.75 for shipping. They have a few niggles to work out but was refunded very quickly the extra shipping I had to pay to move the order along. Super fast communication.
Now if I could find a good stock Honda head gasket without selling the family farm I would be a happy camper.  ;)   http://www.ebay.com/usr/oringsandmore?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2754

Thank you, Eric.

The seller you mentioned - do you get under towers pucks from them too?

I did not check for those and doubt they would have them as they are probably a specialty item but may be worth a search. Check out this picture of an engine I am working on now. I think all the previous owner used under the towers was an o-ring instead of pucks. I wouldn't but the engine was not covered in oil.  Hmmm-- does it work ??  Guess it just need to seal oil from the holes- Hmmm again  :D

The puck is probably more foolproof in production?  I seem to remember Hondaman mentioning th use of orings instead of pucks.

I use Yamiya for OEM gaskets rubber pucks, O-rings. Shipping is fast and if the Yen is weak can't find a better deal.

The pucks are still available from Honda. A member here did some research and comparisons on some of the different available pucks, will see if I can find the thread. Their height is a very important issue, must sit proud of the head surface enough to get a good squish. Think some may be better than others. Nobody wants 'to go back in'.

I had mine from CycleX, they were still good after 5 000 miles on Red, but I am gonna replace them anyway.

There was no oil underneath them when I took the top apart.

I thought about that during my build as well, and I concluded the innards of the puck probably help keep its shape, preventing the compressed edge from squirting out when under pressure from the tower.
Honda used pucks and not o-rings.
I bought a dozen pucks.  I had a good sample to measure and find the thick ones.  There were plenty of short ones in the bunches.

Glad you checked in Fly, saves me looking for your thread. Do you remember the optimal thickness/dimensions a person should shoot for before buttoning up the towers ?

I get my seals from a bearing supplier here, I wonder if they can get me metric o rings that seem so darn hard to find in (metric!!) Canada.

Per HMs book .040" larger than the recess depth is ideal.
.030" is his suggested minimum.

I have used http://www.theoringstore.com/ to purchase individual o-rings to rebuild a couple racks of 550 carbs. It probably cost me about ~$12-15 per rack and you can buy the o-rings in any material to meet your fancy.

I bought my 750 top end kit from Cycle X as well. For two rebuilds actually. Both times they were great. I had a leak at the valve cover once, but that was my fault for not cleaning the surface well enough. Never had leaks anywhere else.

I gave away 4 OEM head gaskets 1 year ago since I have had 836 for very long time. Used complete gasket sets and always saved the head gasket.
Some sets have extra oil pan gasket too, for K0.

You might have a big bore CB750 guy close that has a not and never to be used head gasket on the shelf?

If you don't mind the prices you can try CMSNL.com. I replaced almost all of my gaskets and o-rings through them. Even if they they don't have them in stock you can use their parts feche as a guide and plug the part numbers into eBay. You could very well save money with CMS if you were to find all of what you need with them. You can also replace all of you dowel pens too.
While you can get a packaged engine rebuild kit anywhere, CMSNL can help replace what's not in the kit. They also sell certain new engine block pieces. Not sure if they are NOS or replicas but they sell them to the highest bitter.

Thats what I did last time and it worked well for me, cyclex.  Than I had to yank the engine out because it would not shift above three and got a set of exhaust rings from ebay plus paper gaskets for side covers.

At least pick up some extra 11 x 2.5 rings to have around. They fit on pretty much all the main oil fittings like the pump, oil line to engine, under the block etc.. Same size as the ring that goes on the oil filter bolt. They will not be included in just a top end kit if you go that way.

Oring store is the ticket. I did a quick search and they have everything you need as far as o-rings for the head, cylinders and cases in Viton, with small quantity requirements. That's who I'm using for my next engine build.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Just got my order today from the E-bay seller I pointed out. Will compare them to some stockers and will probably use most of the 11 x 2.5 on my current engine project. If I like them and when I re-order going to pick up some more popular sizes and put my o-ring hunting to bed once and for all. One day running around locally with bad results was enough for me !!

I believe the last pucks I bought were from PartZilla,  they are a good vender.

http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/honda/HP-91318-300-013.html

I did not measure them but no leaks yet.

As far as gaskets, I've had good luck with Vesrah, they are made in Japan.
