White paint valve springs
« on: March 14, 2017, 03:35:13 PM »
Good day!
Question... I was sorting some of my parts and I came across a late style 750 head that has white paint marks on the top of the valve springs near the retainers.  All the valves are marked, both intake and exhaust.  It's a k head, not an f.
I've never seen a set like this... Anyone seen this before? Any ideas?

Could it be that a PO has marked them to ensure that they went back in the same way as they came out?

That was my first thought, but after examining they are all marked the same! Definitely not something to mark for assembly

I've seen that before also, maybe a factory proof mark of some kind.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that it is an orientation marking.  Paint end up or down I don't remember.  I had them on mine when I rebuilt my engine.  Damned if I saw any difference in the spring ends but I put them back in the same way I found them.  Many springs have a paint  end (color of paint) to denote spring rating.  Perhaps that's the reason.

I suspect an inspection mark. I dont know how they install them with speed, but I never trust them till I give them a rap with a soft hammer to make sure the collars seated..

Thanks guys... Seems reasonable to me. The head is pretty minty to me and would seem something from the factory.  I've just never seen that before, first for everything I guess!

It is done at the factory to indicate the top of the valve spring. It speeds up assembly when using progressive wound springs
