It's your voltage regulator.

Good luck. The regulator is hard to find and generally expensive. If it's just a broken tab and you can fix it easily, I would go that way.

Same guy twice, But I am vote three, and I will tell you that so far it has been a MAJOR improvement over all the stock regulators I have ever dealt with. It is worth every cent to take the old manual reg out of the system. I have a few of my old regulators for back ups, but I am that type of guy. L

I just don't understand why people have such a problem with the stock regulator.  It's so simple.  It has a level of complexity just above that of a straight piece of wire in that it has a switch contact and spring in it.  Perhaps it's the dreaded adjustment that throws people in such a tizzy.
Okay, I admit, the switch contact can become dirty.  A bit of burnishing and you're good for another thirty years.  I haven't ever seen the adjustment change without ham fist intervention.

Certainly people have a right to toss money at whatever tickles their fancy.  But, I think I'll toss mine somewhere else.

Mine still works fine.. why change it?

Oh yeah.. a new-fangled one will make up for other problems in the electrical system.

But then, fix those problems and the stock one will work again...

This once again proves my theory: Time is the inverse of money. Spend a lot of money, spend little time. Spen a lot of time, spend little money. Spend lots of money and buy a modern regulator. Spend a bit of time cleaning electrical connections and check over the wiring and you're off and running...(this sound familliar with me, TT? :) You taught me a valuable lesson through that excerise with the 550. Welcome back, BTW)

Of course, our fellow here has a legitimate problem with his as the connectors have broken off.

Well I know this has been "argued"/ discussed before but I swear to God that with the Oregon fella's voltage regulator on my 750 that I get a consistent 13.5 volts at 1000rpm idle.  The stock regulator does not in practice seem capable of matching that!  Definitely an nice uprgrade in my opinion (not too much $ either) , and yes I spent the proper time cleaning up and inspecting my entire electrical system too. . . . . .

There's also this option- http://www.sohc4.us/forums/index.php?topic=12465.0

Inexpensive, electronic, and... um... cheap.

Works fine for me.  I've seen here that these will also help your battery to last longer,  but I can't give first hand confirmation of that.
