I need a good 350F brake caliper.
« on: March 25, 2017, 11:09:54 AM »
So I've restored a 1973 four cylinder 350 for my wife and I've always been very unhappy with the front brake caliper. It often fails to retract and you get a rolling seize and then you have to stop back the bike up for it to release its grip. All in all not worth any lack of reliability especially in a potential sieze situation. EBay has reproduction new brake calipers for sale for just over $100. Should I buy one? Any original piece is going to be over 40 years old so what's the best way to get a very reliable front brake?

Here is the eBay listing I was considering: https://www.ebay.com/itm/152338470582

There's a good chance that you have some crud in the return for your master cylinder

I guess I've got to dismantle the whole damn thing. But as I recreate it I really really want a very reliable front brake. (Who doesn't?). So what should I replace?

Is the 4 into 1 kit stuff good? It's new but it's not Honda.

There's one on Ebay that I can 'speak for'  :) right now and it's a red dot orig. "Honda oem w/ 813 org. miles" that will fit your CB350F exactly,if interested let me know and we can talk price.
I don't know computers much so I don't have a link.

Sorry meant to say make sure it's not the return hole in the master cylinder

I think it's the piston. I get good return when I really squeeze it back in.

I searched eBay using a whole bunch of different combinations of these words and I don't see it.

Have you taken your original caliper off yet and cleaned it well and inspected the piston for pits and rust around the pads. The new rubber gasket for the piston bore is cheap and all the old accumulated crud in the gasket groove must be cleaned out. Not a lot of moving parts there to go bad.Should be fine all cleaned up.
If the return hole for the master cylinder is plugged or not working correctly that can cause the front brake to seize or release very slowly. It may need attention also like a rebuild kit or a disassemble and cleaning. A bad brake line that is collapsing can let fluid through one way and not let it return which can cause a seize also. A way to check is if it is seized because of these issues is to open the bleeder and see if it releases quickly.
Lots of things to check down the line if your having a braking problem.
