I think it's also near impossible to match the honda paint job. I've seen kits out there. Has anyone used these with success?
I did my K1 side covers last Spring. For my purposes it was definitely a success. It's obviously not an exact match for the 46 year old faded factory tank paint, but it's far better than the cheap-o side covers and Home Depot spray paint I've been rocking for the last 12 years. The side covers and badges are repros fro DSS, and the paint is pre-mixed rattle cans from VMR Paints. I have a spray gun and a decent amount of experience using it, but didn't feel like dealing with all of that for such a small project. I was really pleased with how well the can sprayed and with the results, and I don't think (with my experience at least) that I could have done a better job with my spray gun.
When it came down to it, I wanted "stock looking" side covers, and I had long since given up on finding a good, matching stock pair for less than an entire paycheck. When it was all said and done I think I spent about $400 on these, and they're brand new so I won't ever have to worry about them getting brittle in the foreseeable future. I don't spend that kind of money easily, especially on something purely cosmetic, but this has been a looooong time coming, and it was well worth it, in my opinion.
