reg/rec wiring
« on: April 28, 2017, 07:43:00 PM »
I am rewiring my entire bike, no harness.  I have a new reg/rec from Rick's to install and need to figure out what the wires in my one remaining plug are.  All instructions say to wire the three yellow wires from the stator to the reg/rec, but there are four yellow wires on this plug coming from the stator area.  Which one in the picture is the "white" wire supposedly coming from the field coil.  They all look equally yellow to me.
Maybe someone knows which position on the plug is which.
From my understanding, the two wires on the left in the plug go to oil and neutral lights.

Typically, the three yellow wires are right next to each other on a row.  The white one should be on the other row.
Clean the wires with something potent and the color should come back.  All else fails, gently scratch the insulation to remove oxidation discoloring.

Dakota if you like I can take a photo of mine.

It's been a while, had problems with a shorting stator, replaced with another stator and Ricks reg/ rectifier all good now and charging at 14.5v.
Decided also to replaced the old plugs (which were causing problems, not connecting correctly).

Noticed a small oil weep at the left side of the head, either a rubber puck or O ring, I hope it's not the O ring that's inbetween the head and barrels.

Follow what Cal says and the wiring diagram, I managed ok and electrics aren't my strong point

I removed the covers and found that the field coil white wire was fried to the connection point so I check the resistance on the field coil wires and got 11 ohms.  What does that mean?

It means I've got a shorted wire that's what it means. Found the culprit thank you previous owner, Dagnabbit

No, I wanted ricks regardless to simplify for all new minimal wiring.
If I fix these wires and insulate them with silicone, will that hold up in oiled environment?
On another note, will simple green deteriorate any parts?

you can fix that konnektion...klean up the soldering points...and solder new vires on..and seal it vith epoxy...mine have run for years
i kan not speak english/but trying!!

Thanks for the pic and instructions.  I was going to take to a small motor guy.  Now I'll keep my money and do it myself.  What kind of epoxy?

I am wiring up the rest of the bike starting at the headlight, hi/lo switch and starter button.  The headlight shines fine but I popped the 25 amp fuse while testing out the button with my meter.   Will an old headlight blow a fuse like that?  New headlight or wire differently?

So doing a little more educational reading and figured out that the starter button is a grounding button not a powered switch like I had it wired.
Tomorrow I'll run power to solenoid than ground through the button activates the solenoid.

I have the field coil ready to solder on new wires but am still reading 11 ohms between the green and white leads. Is that ok?

Some are grounded some are powered depends on year and loom

78 750K should have 3 wires to the starter button as the button turns off the headlamp before engaging the starter and the button sends power down to the solenoid which is grounded on the other small connection, there should be a starter safety switch system as well.

This all assumes you are using year correct loom and switches, also reading the correct wiring diagram

I'm using a simple aftermarket headlight/starter button, I'm not using the wiring harness, custom wiring.

Then unfortunately you are on your own experimenting, does the starter button have one wire or two wire going too it. Dont forget I am in UK so you wont get instant answers!

you can vire the stator magenet up vith the battery..and test its amps

..use the multimeter on amps scale..but have a fuse inn over..just put 12 volt on and see if it get matenetic.

.and not turn ekstreem hot..like a heat element.normaly shorted vindings give less ohm..and a heigh amp flow(low internal ohm).

...and a korodet coil gives low amp...but make a lot of heat..as the( internal ohm is heigh)

..both is a problem

Since I measured 11 ohms across the field coil wires, I took it to the local expert to check out and fix.  He measured 7 ohms, so yay!  He's going to put on new wires and epoxy it for me for about $30.
