Any FT 500 guys out there ?
« on: May 04, 2017, 02:29:42 PM »
Got a line on a 1983 Honda FT500.  Clean, original with about 17k miles.   Has kick started shaft added and a new head gasket and rings - but has sat for a few years.

I know it's impossible, but what kind of money are these fetching today ?     I'm pretty confident that it would start right up after a little carb cleaning and a new battery.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

I've been on the lookout for a project FT500 for a while now. They don't turn up that often. I don't think they sell for a ton of money, similar to a clean SOHC 500/550 I would think. There's one for sale near me right now, running and ready to go, he's asking $2,800 for it, which is consistent with other running and ready to go FT's I have seen.

I have an '82 FT 500; they aren't particularly good at any one thing, but are still a fun bike. Fairly light (compared to a four), good brakes, decent forks, and 50+ MPG. Low vibration for a big thumper, thanks to the counter-balancer, but not really suited to long high-speed cruising. Weak spots are the complex (both electrically and mechanically) electric starter, and the double-wall exhaust header, where the inner pipe has a tendency to break away from the outer pipe, which can cause a rattle or partially block the exhaust near the head port.
As far as value, I paid $400 for mine used, but that was 30+ years ago, and back then you could buy one brand new from the dealer for less than $1000; they didn't sell very well. A well sorted FT, with newer tires and clean title would be in the asking range of $1500, and non-running, complete bikes may go for as little as $500 today. If someone wants to pay $2800 for mine, I might consider selling it. ;D
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

this one has been up for a while, listed at $1500

"1982 Honda FT500 Ascot. Overall relly decent shape for 35 years old! Just replaced battery and engine starts easily, idles perfecly and runs strong. No smoke. Last owner removed baffle from end of muffler so it's a bit louder than stock. Header pipe was repaired. All lights work, tank is rust free, seat is nice, tires are good. Chain is getting to end of it's life along with brake pads. Bike has some small dents on tank as shown and scuffs and scratches here and there. I purchased 2 years ago and planned on restoring nicely but need garage space so decided to sell it. Bike has 24,800 miles. I have a clean title."

20? Wow, that might actually be a measurable share of the total remaining FT's in the US.

I know where one is. A friend bought it years ago thinking she'd like to learn to ride a motorcycle. She's totally not the rider type. I think she was just in love with the idea or image. And she just had a baby. I could probably get it for way under $1K.  But, lord....I am trying my best to not haul home any more projects!!

I've had this weird idea of doing a FT500/CB550 mix and match.

Swap the FT's front end (with a triple clamp upgrade since the FT has bigger tubes), swing arm, and wheels onto a 550 and the CB stuff to the FT. So the CB ends up with alloys and front/rear disk brakes and the FT becomes a bit more GoldStar like, but with a front disk.

The FT forks are about 4" longer than 750 forks, so a 550 would look like a Japanese chopper, and the FT would scrape it's oil pan over parking lot speed-bumps. ::) Btw, the FT uses the same steering stem bearings as the sohc fours, and uses the same battery as the 750.

John,
I don't know about these, but I have a KLR650 thumper, 1990 Tengai and I love love love that bike.   Way more fun that it has any right to be.
Not the best at off road or on-road, but it can do a bit of both fairly well.

Where is it located ?    I do have one local that the guy will sell, but he wants $1700.  Currently doesn't run - mainly because it has sat.  Has a kickstarter shaft added, new gaskets etc.  Other than that, it is in really good shape.  I'm doing some work on one of his other bikes (too cheap) so hopefully, I can negotiate a little for the FT.  Truth be told, I'd probably pay the $1700 and not feel too bad.  I really think I could have it running in 15 minutes.  It was stored without gas & he doesn't run ethanol fuel.  For once a PO with a heart.

 Tell me about this.
The FT motor was based on the '79-82 XR/XL 500s, which were kick start. While the kick starter parts can be swapped onto the FT motor, the kick-starter won't clear the FT foot peg; IIRC, the XR had a stout "U" shaped steel foot peg mount, that allowed the kick lever to pass between the peg and the motor. The XR/XL also had a compression release that held the exhaust valves open, operated either automatically via a cable attached to the kick mechanism, or manually via a short handlebar mounted lever.

 Well, that changes everything....
My friend finally sent me some pics of the Ascot today. All this time, I thought it was the FT500. Nope....surprise! It's the VT500!
Bonus...I guess? Not so crazy about the shaft drive, but isn't the VF a little more rare and desirable?

These are the only other two pics she sent. If the tank is solid, I can clean it. No problem....done it plenty of times. I'll just assume the carbs need done. I have a great carb guy within walking distance of my house.
Then, normal stuff: fork oil, battery, plugs, engine oil and filter, etc.
And I'm sure the tires are toast, too.

It's possible I can even work out a package deal with this CB360. I don't want it....just sold two NICE CL350's, but I might be able to flip it.
