  • Really enjoying this!
Hello all,

I would like to paint quite a bit of this bike black.  I am considering using VHT roll bar and chassis paint for everything but the engine.  Any comments?

Also, what black spray paint would you recommend for painting the engine?  What primer?  And any tips for engine painting?

Finally, if I have a tank in decent shape, what say you to sanding the current topcoat a bit and then spraying final color over the top of that instead of stripping, re-priming, etc.?

I'm doing this all myself, and while not trying to cut corners, I'd rather not take any unnecessary steps.

I like duplicolor aerosols.  Vht is good for many things too.

Its the prep work that will make or break ya.

The vht expoxy paint is very durable.

I've been researching the same thing and, after considering VHT, POR-15, and Eastwood, I think I'm leaning toward the Eastwood engine paint.  It's a two-part epoxy (in rattle can) which seems to have good reviews.

My concern was flaking and/or using a clear that would eventually yellow.  The Eastwood product seems to suit my needs the best.  Unlike VHT, baking isn't required and, unlike the POR-15 which is a brush-on, the Eastwood is sprayed on ... and everything I hear about 2-part epoxy is very good.  Of course, all of the info that I've come across seems to indicate that the prep is the most important thing.

Someone here recc'd Rust-0leum appliance epoxy for the frame. Worked great. The degree of gloss seems totally stock.

VHT for the engine worked great for me.  Clean clean clean before you even think about spraying...and I used primer.

I have found the Duplicolor and VHT items to be hard to apply and awful smelling compared to other paint.

I was burning cans of Duplicolor black on a frame like it was going out of style and it flashed so quickly, good coverage was near impossible.

I finally got sick of it and switched to Rust-oleum black and it flashes slower, meaning it dries to a nicer consistency since I can get all the paint on for that coat before it flashes.

I have grown up with Rust-oleum and it has not let me down yet. I will be doing my frame in standard gloss black, I had my eye on the appliance epoxy but this was cheaper and will do the job just as well.

Believe it or not, good old Walmart aerosol cans. Looks good, reasonably tough and easy to touch up. I've used their black on frame, swing arm, brackets, etc., plenty of times. It used to be $1 a can, I think it's up to $2 now.

I used a black chassis paint from Harbor Freight on the frame of my project bike. The finish is almost identical to the original black with just the right amount of gloss.

And VHT silver is a very, very close match to the original silver engine color.
