Help me identify my bike
« on: May 22, 2017, 01:52:05 AM »
Hi, I've recently purchased a bike in New Zealand and I'm struggling to identify the actual model.  The NZ VIN identifies it as a 83 CBX750, but I'm not convinced.

I've starting striping down the bike and identified the engine number as RC01E 4101230.

Any help identifying the year and model would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Lee.

What is tamped on the frame at the steering neck? One side is engraved, the other should have a plate riveted to the frame. Engine numbers don't usually match on motorcycles, but do indicate the year of the engined model of engine.

RC01 is the model designation for the double overhead cam CB750K model (1979 -1982). The "E" on the end of this designation stands for "engine". Often (but not always) the frame number will have an "F" after the model designation e.g RC01F.
The CBX750 model designation is RC17. If your's is a CBX750 then it's been fitted with a different (later model) engine therefore.

I must disagree with this to an extend. In the U.S., 82 and 83 CB750 Nighthawks also had RC01E.. engine numbers.
Considering it is a RC01E- 4101230...., it could very well be a CBX750 as the non-U.S. issued CBX750s had the same basic engine as the U.S. Nighthawks.
