I drill the spot welds and it comes right off.

Short of cutting/drilling them out and repairing the metal holes, most just fill the area with polyester body filler. If you plow a bunch of Bondo in there, do it in layers allowing the initial layers to dry fully. Any moisture trapped will off-gas and bubble up.

The biggest issue I've had in just filling over the brackets is that most of the ones I remove, have a lot of crud and corrosion behind them

If tank is a good one without dents and rust. Find a cheap one with dents thay you can fill up with 2k filler making it smooth. Then custom paint paint in a way that will match a badgeless tank. Airbrushed with skulls etc.

Like this!! But no badges

The K2 original tank will be good for future use when you have changed your mind and want the OEM look again.
I remember guys here with really nice CB750 and Z1-900 original tanks they made smooth without badges and gave a hot motive paint which was tough then in late70's early 80's.

I'm sure the today owners of those bike would like to have the original tanks too if bikes are still on the road.

Is the rail flush with the rest of it? I have a K8 and it's flush on this, so I'd just fill it in so worst case I could later gently blast it out if I wanted to (which I may just do on my other K8 where someone has already done this)
