I have trouble with the front forks - new front fork tubes
here is what I am trying to do
Please note - I dont do step 9
after step 8 - all falls apart - so to speak
after step 8 I tighten up all bolts and that where it goes pear shape,
after I tighten up one lower triple tree bolt, it is out of alignment again !!
no matter what I do...
Here is the process I am following, I found that on the sohc forum:
1. Loosen the top clamp bolt on the steering stem.
2. Loosen the top steering stem nut.
3. Tighten the top fork clamps
4. Tighten the lower fork clamps then loosen the bolts about1/4 turn
5. Tighten the axle clamp bolts to spec, then loosen 1/4 turn
6. Twist the handle bars until a piece of glass lays flat across the forks
7. Tighten the top clamp bolt on the steering stem.
8. Recheck the fork alignment with a piece of glass.
9. Reinstall the front fender
10. Tighten the bolts to spec.
I came to the conclusion that the top clamp does not clamp, so I undid all the triple tree
and "wiggled" it up so the steering stem is free and I put a shim, 0.05mm or 20"thou, around the steering
stem tube and then redid the whole process - and ... nothing, same result.
As soon as I do up one of the lower clamp bolts, it is out of alignment.
Any suggestions?
thank you so much
