Topic: Kreem after Acetone Treatment?

Howdy all, I'm trying to take out some of the old Kreem liner inside my 550 tank and its currently sitting full of Acetone. The Acetome seems to be doing the job and chunks of the old liner is coming off.

Does anyone know if I can go ahead and pour the new Kreem liner in as soon as I drain the Acetone? Will the Acetone make the Kreem Liner react and it wont stick to my tank?

Any advice would help.

You might try doing a search on "Kreem" here, you will find that it is not well regarded. Why are you removing the Kreem coating that is in there? If it is because it is not holding up, why do it again? You could try POR-15 instead, or nothing. Just get it cleaned out, make sure there is no rust.

Thanks for the reply Bob...I'm taking out the old liner since the PO didnt do a great job at lining it and its peeling off in certain places. after a few hours in the Acetone bath the tank does show some surface rust, like a light rust film. I've looked at the previous threads but couldnt find any comments regarding any prep work after the acetone treatment...would hate to just waste a bottle of the kreem liner if it had a weird reaction to the acetone.

Really can't say for certain. If there is some rust, after removing the present lining, you will likely need to do some sort of acid wash for the rust. Personally, I think it should be phosphoric based, but members have used other methods. I've never used Kreem, so I will leave that to others. I believe there are some members who have used it successfully and liked it.

Follow Kreem instructions. Throw in a large pile of nuts and bolts or screws, shake it around for long time. Repeat until you are satisfied. Dump the nuts and bolts. This will get rid of any remaining loose crap. Rinse w/ dish soap and water and dump it. Pour in a container of gas line anti-freeze (alcohol) and shake and dump. This will remove any remaining water. Follow Kreem instructions

Kreem is garbage (my opinion).
Find a radiator shop and have them seal it - much better in the long run.

The second part of the Kreem two pack is in fact acetone to begin with.

Actually some are MEK but its essensially the same thing.

Kreem however sucks. Your assuming the PO did a crummy job. Fact of the matter is he probably did everything per directions. The stuff just doesn't stick. Sometimes it does but not indefinitely.


Save yourself some heartache down the road and use POR-15. Its almost universally the choice of anyone who has done any sort of sealing on tanks over multiple tanks and years.

I removed the rust from mine with phosphoric acid, (Like Bob says), poured in about a pint of gas and rinsed it well.  When it was rinsed, I filled it with gas, been fine since.  Keep it filled to minimize the opportunity to rust.

I used the kreem method on my Gold wing but never used the liner part heard to many horror stories of it pealing away from teh sides of the tank. It has been ten years now and still has no rust in it.

Kreem is sub standard...Google Bill Hirsch Automotive and look for their tank sealer kit.  Ok with alcohol and the only one that works with fiberglass tanks
