CB900C exhaust problem, Delkevic solution?
« on: July 25, 2017, 08:05:01 PM »
Horrible bike is a 900C but I am trying to resurrect one for a customer/friend.  After getting the bike running I took it for a sort test ride, found the exhaust blown to smithereens. Every replacement I see on ebay looks questionable at best  so I'm thinking of a Delkevic 4 into 1 at 349 with free shipping.  Question is, has anyone on here done this to a 900c, or even used a Delkevic?

He'll have more money than the POS is worth so I am trying to dissuade the purchase but it may be inevitable...Larry

Heck, that'll buff right out...
Several have used the Delkevic exhausts on 550 s and they reported pleased results of the install, happy with the sound and quality.

Are the headers solid enough to reuse and could a muffler shop weld up some collectors if you had acquired the parts from Cone Engineering. Then a SuperTrapp or other muffler be fitted?
I do not know if the 900C is a quad muffler setup.
If you cannot talk him into getting rid of the bike, given the general concensus about the 900C being a poor example of a Honda.  Now if it were a 900F, I could see to invest in it...
It will be tough to sell the 900C without an exhaust as it is going to not run well until it has some backpressure to even out the exhaust pulses and help with the scavenging.

The Delkevic is as you say, the best option out there, very hard to get an exhaust system without spending $300+  for an aftermarket exhaust.  Ripple Rock Racers carries the Hindle, a better system if they make one for the 900C.
Doubtful that they do, would not be a bad idea to ask Kemp if something could be adapted...

Thanks David.  Rot is so bad the inner baffles are missing.  Each side has two pipes that are interlinked so one has to buy the entire side. The is no back pressure because baffles are shot-bike backfired, sputtered and ran like crap.  No power,

I just bolted up a new Delkevic muffler to their header on my CB750F today. I held off on getting a muffler for a year because I didn't like the original classic style. I ordered the straight style Friday afternoon about 4:30 and I had it yesterday. UPS had it out for delivery first thing Monday morning. The baffles are 2 or 3 piece and can be adjusted for sound. Mine was easy to install. I am pleased with the fit and finish plus I like the idea of stainless. I have found their people very nice, knowledgeable and great to do business with. IMO you can't beat it for the price. Quite a bit lighter than the stock system too.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Thank you Jerry for the detailed response.  If the owner wants to spring for a set I'll recommend it, hard to beat the price(used crappy sets on ebay are half that for one side)...Larry(aka Larry Billy Bob)

I bought a vance and hines sidewinder for the one I had. I had to fab up a hanger tab, but it ran well and was loud as hell with no baffle. I bolted the back off an old gauge in the megaphone just so it would appear to have something there. It looked like a baffle but did little to silence it.
The buyer didn't want to pay for it so I put the cut off header pipes back on and kept the header for my 750 drag bike. It does fit.
The 900 ran lousy with the cut off stock pipes.

Thanks Don, I can imagine how poorly the 900 would run without the back pressure from an exhaust as this one ran horribly with only two blown out pipes.  Thanks again for all your help with the PC...Larry

The PC was an adventure Larry. I had a blast stealing a bike out of someone's garage. My buddy who was a "vehicle recovery" man was proud. It was good to be home with it and no cops on our tail. lol.

It was odd it ran so good with the sidewinder but awful with the cut pipes. The buyer barely made it home.
