Lester Mags - Can Go Tubeless?
« on: December 25, 2006, 02:13:13 AM »
Just picked up a set of Lester mag wheels for my retro-resto project. (CB750K5)

Just wondered if these things are rated for use with tubeless tires.

Bought them without tires mounted, the front rim has a tubeless style air fill valve installed, the rear does not.

Your thoughts?

And wishing a Merry, Merry, Happy Holidays to everyone on the SOHC4 Forum!  :)

Not sure really, however you CAN use tubes inside a tubeless tire. I erad in a post once that it only lowers the speed rating of the tire by one. For example, lowering from a "H" rating (210 mph) to an "S" rating (180 mph). Not really a concern on these SOHC's. Not a lot of 210 mph CB's on the road!

kettlesd,
Thanks for the reply. I read that last night when I ran a search on the subject.
The reason that I asked about the tube thing, is that if possible, I prefer to run them without tubes.
I had an incident happen to me fifteen years ago on my CB400F where the rear tire blew out on the freeway
at 70mph almost causing me to lose control. It was due to instant tube failure.
By the grace of God and a lot of luck, I was able to control it through the ensuing tank-slapper
while riding two-up with my pregnant wife on the back.
To this day, I avoid riding bikes with tube tires at speed, I much prefer tubeless rims/tires.
Gives me much more piece of mind, when a tubeless tire is punctured, the loss of air
seems much slower and controlled, giving warning without causing instant mayhem.

I suspect that a previous owner of these Lester rims was running tubeless due to the
type of air valve that is previously installed in the front rim. Cant run a tube simultaneously.
I posted this to see what the experts have to say on the subject.

I can only use  tube’d tyre’s with my mags, according to my tyre fitter it’s very dangerous running a tubeless tyres with no tube on a rim that should have a tube check the lip of the rim where the tyre seats.

What I was told for my bikes with older mags was tubes were mandatory unless the rims were stamped 'tubeless'.  Othewise they would peel-off going around a corner or leak off at higher speeds.  Neither were worth the risk considering the cost of a tube, just check the pressure more frequent so the tire doesn't burn (rubbing) the tube riding hard or 2-up.
