76 550F with 400f pegs
« on: August 16, 2017, 03:04:32 PM »
I am still in the process of getting the 550 where I want it and I enjoyed the couple of miles since I got it running.  I have researched, maybe I missed it, the 75-76 400F factory rearset fitment to all ends with no closure as to if they'll fit.  I do have parts coming in the mail and I will attach the right side pictures of the mount/footrests I received today hopefully the mount is correct (was definitely a good buy if correct).  I have the complete linkage coming yet and the left side mount with the linkage pivot coming from Germany by weeks end I hope.  All insight or links to adding them to a 550F would be great.  Thanks in advance for all members input and knowledge here as I've been reading and applying it the past couple years.  I will be sure to get my build thread done when it's complete.  Best regards to all from Nebraska!

Paged through and it didn't look like he used 400F pegs on that build.

I've got some insight, although for the record I didn't complete the conversion on the 550K I was working on as it went a different direction. I did my first 400F peg conversion on a 350F in 1997 and have done a bunch since, but only tried the 550 once.

But here is what I recall, and here are a few issues from the 350F conversion that might be relevant. First-- the pegs will fit and mount. On 350F conversions I usually cut down the brake side peg as it has that weird retainer part on the front. You may find some fitment issues depending on what kind of exhaust you run. My 550 had a Kerker 4-1, and it was going to be an issue that I would've had to work on. For the 350F conversion, I run the 400F brake lever on the right hand side, but it sticks out a little more since the 400F exhaust wrapped all four pipes to the right hand side to the collector. You could probably run it or fab it, but I'm not sure how your spring will mount or work, and your brake light switch may need some finangling. A 550F kickstarter will work on the 350F/400F peg conversion because it sticks out more, might have to do the same for a 550, or might not. On the LHS, for the 350F conversion I've had to grind down a little of the linkage so that it will function properly and not bind or be unable to complete the shift motion.

I think that's about it. I think that any of these problems can be overcome and the main thing is the pegs will bolt on (at least they did to a 75 550K frame). Good luck, and interested to see how this goes (and if it will do more to drive up the 400F front peg prices -- seems like when the 350F thing caught on 400F pegs got pricey. I'm sitting on 3-4 sets for future projects but when they run out I'll probably figure something else out... although there are still boneyards out there with them I suspect -- but not my local ones anymore!).

Thanks Carnivorous for the insight.  I am working with an "F" frame.  I did notice that it's been done as you described and also on the "K" frames its almost a no brainer with a little cutting, grinding and bending.  Really digging for it being done on the 550F bikes, but maybe it's too much of a stretch.  I've got a welder and am certified and need a lathe and a mill or this'd be in the bank already, Ha!  Not scared to cut into but this bike was a gift I promised I'd never sell and if the time comes I've got the parts to go back completely stock.  Maybe I should source a good 550K...hmmm.  I'm not one to to give in but we'll see.  Thanks again and I'll keep everyone updated.

Pretty sure (not totally) that this swap works better/easier on the 550f than the k...Kinda surprised Scott S has not been by personally to help yet.

Am I the only one who has used 400f footpegs on a 750f0?...really not trying to inflate demand for these already expensive parts
If it works good, it looks good...

I've read Scott's post on the conversion but the one that uses 400 sets was done on a 500 frame.  Been going back other posts as far back as 10 year's or so to keep it fresh.  Lots of time on my hands at the moment.  I'll  PM him this week yet.  Still digging though.  As far as the 750 goes, couldn't you just flip the right and left brackets to opposite sides?  I know the 77-78 550F that is possible and moves them back about 2 inches for free.

gotta be careful talking about 750's...early k's, early f's, late f's (I have never owned a late K)all have slightly different footpegs...and it's a similar situation with the different years and model 550's.

I have pondered doing a side to side flip on my 78 750F.  The cylinder head is worn out so the point is moot until I get back into that one.  If I remember correctly, the pegs would flip but then you have to modify the shift and brake levers, which is why I never messed with it when the bike still ran good.
If it works good, it looks good...

I will "mind my manners" when speaking of the 750s.  Been looking at a 750 for some time but that's another story.

Old thread, but wondering if you figured this out- I have a 77 550F that I'd like to convert to 400F-style rearsets.
