For the owners of the candidate bikes, please feel free to post a BRIEF summary of your build (what you started with, what you did, who helped) with photos of course.  The back-story can be a very important factor in voting.

I'll take some new photos ASAP!

Here's how it looks 10 years ago when I bought it with no title for $400. It had a huge rust hole through the frame and was dented, rusty and pitted, PLUS I did not know how to drive it! I camped out for hours infront of the previous owner's house to get him to sign over the title (long story). It has been moved in pieces to 4 different garages over the span of almost 10 years. I could never have done it without this forum. Thank you to you all!

Here's some various incarnations of the bike as I figured it out and used it as a daily for about 3 years until the transmission lock-up in permanent 2nd

First major rebuild (head gasket leak and I put the transmission in wrong and had no 5th gear):

Second major rebuild (head gasket leak)

Third rebuild (current)

Only 9 days left!    If it ever stops raining for more than 5 minutes I'll get some new photos up and include a bit of a build summary.  I've changed the bars to a lower set and she looks a lot more streamlined.

For me everything started with a trip to Barcelona 2 years ago. I fell in love with a bike I saw parked in central Barcelona. It was a blue BMW Airhead. Since I'm a BMW fan I started to hunt for one  when I came home to Sweden. I couldn't find one for a good price and I came across the one I have now for a good price. I'm more than happy for my choose. I bought my CB500 in April 2016 and the plan was not to do a total rebuild. It ended up like that anyway. I can't leave things half way done and that's my person. The next thing after the buy was to get a driving license, garage and tools. I rented a garage and bought the necessary tools and got the license in June 2016.

Since this is my first bike and I had zero knowledge about bikes, I must say it has been many challenges during the way. The best thing about the build has been all the new things I have learned, not only about the bike but life also. Half of build time has been put on reading and preparing. With that said I want to thank this forum for helping me and for all good reading. If it was not for this forum, I think wouldn't be able to finish my ”dream”.

A short summary of what I've done to the bike:
-   Overhauled engine with new parts for what was weared. Piston rings, cam chain, rubber dampers, ++++++
-   Blasted parts and powder coated, freshened up those parts that didn't need new paint.
-   Overhauled brakes, new Nissin MC, SS-lines, dual disc.
-   M-unit with new custom harness (thanks Calj)
-   All-LED
-   New spokes on wheels, Metzeler Klassitek tires.
-   + much more. Pictures tells.

More plans:
-   I'm working with new sidecovers that will have leather bags on them, so I can have some tools with me and other bits when I ride.
-   Cartridge Emulators.
-   Maybe but just maybe a USD fork and alu-rims.

I will definitely build more bikes in the future but first I want to buy a modern bike and now I'm saving money for a R Nine T Scrambler.

All very nice bikes.  I like that AlBundy still has the inspiration photo for his build.  For me, I had to go with SKTP (the local from Long Beach) and that undeniably killer sidewinder pipe!

This was my first attempt at anything like this and my first foray into anything really mechanical so I'm pretty pleased with where I have got to so far.  I had a lot of help and inspiration from the people and resources on this forum so a big thanks to you all.  I did everything myself where possible however I did seek professional help with a few specialist fabrication items such as the seat, seat pan, custom headers and the paint job.

She still needs some minor tuning and to fix a small electrical gremlin in the lighting circuit however all in all she's pretty much complete.  I'll also upgrade the rear shocks sometime but for now I'm just enjoying getting out on the road.

She is a 1972 CB500, imported into New Zealand new, and used for most of her life as a Police Bike.  She was taken off the road in about 1991, probably due to an accident, and the trail went cold until I rescued her from a dodgy blokes garage in 2015.  I took over 2 years restoring her and she finally got re-registered and legally put back on the road in August 2017.

1972 CB500 - Modification summary
  • Repsol orange paint job
  • Custom fabricated leather seat
  • Custom fabricated Seat Pan
  • Cafe Racer seat hoop (thanks Harisuluv)
  • Custom fabricated stainless steel 4 into 2 headers with reverse cone mufflers
  • Rebuilt wiring harness
  • Upgraded electrical system with Dyna electronic ignition and coils, Motobatt battery and combined Reg Rec
  • Full engine teardown and rebuild with all new HT cylinder studs, chains, rings, seals & gaskets etc
  • CB650 Cam
  • Frame powdercoated
  • All new steering and wheel bearings and bronze swing arm bushes
  • Carbs full stripped, cleaned and rebuilt using all new components
  • Upgraded to Stainless Steel brake lines

Significant issues encountered...
  • Bent Frame & Forks - I got the frame straightened professionally and I managed to source some new old stock fork tubes locally
  • Primary Chain was worn - The slack was causing it to eat into the engine case.  As this required splitting the cases anyway I decided to overhaul the whole engine whilst I was in there
  • Worn Drive Hub - This was a killer.  I couldn't figure out for weeks why I couldn't line up the back wheel.  Eventually I figured out the inside of the hub was worn very badly. I got super lucky and found a replacement hub with a new bronze bushing already inside.
  • Tuning - 4 Carbs..!  It's just too many... I got it to about 90% right and then I rage quit and took it to someone who knows what they are doing.  To be honest it was worth the money not to have to take the damn things off again.
Good luck to the other nominees and thanks for the nomination... happy just to make the list as there are so many great builds on here.

Some new pics below...

Here's some shots from today. I will try to summaries all the things I have done to it, but I am sure I will forget a bunch of stuff.

Originally bought for $400 running with a stuck master cylinder, smashed speedo and tach, rust everywhere, dented tank, rusty spokes, ripped seat, etc...but it worked!

I acid cleaned the tank, stripped it and rattle-canned it, rebuilt the front-master, got a seat cover and cleaned it up.

I rode it as a daily (no car at all) for about 2-3 years. It was my first bike ever and I had never driven anything prior to this let alone tried to rebuild something. I eventually bent a shifter fork from down-shifting/engine-braking into 1st all the time. I drove it from south Orange County to Cluver City (LA) all this time and had no idea that I was riding a death machine with a hole in the frame, blown shocks, no leathers, and old terrible tires.

So then I decided to rebuild it. I was going to be a tranny swap in 2 weekends. Then 4 garages later with piece labled in zip-lock bags it finally got put together with zero sealent on the cam-tower pucks and one of the gears replace the wrong way. It started on the first kick, but leaked and would only stay in 5th if you held you toe up the entire time. Really safe I am sure!

So then I took it apart again and rubuild it in to the Porche pastel blue F tank version with a custom leather seat...once again, head gasket leak.

So I took the top apart again and had it decked by APE. That is the current incarnation.

It has:

- Rizoma Signals
- CRG lane splitter mirrors
- Dual front brakes with stainless lines
- 5/8th Nissin master
- customized top triple
- RAM iPhone mount with USB
- powder-coated frame
- re-painted tank with real gold-leaf and painted pin stripes
- CB450 Black Bomber headlight bucket and re-calibrated speedo and tach with custom bezel
- Old style fork ears and gators
- Renthal bars & grips
- Re-painted oil-tank
- Braided stainless oil lines
- Powder coated Lester mags
- Fiberglass front fender
- Custom exhaust clamps
- Triple A exhaust
- new rings, bearings, gaskets, most, if not all rubber parts
- real Giuliari seat
- back-cut transmission
- Hondaman rebuilt swingarm
- Ducati taillight and custom bracket
- Ikon shocks
- phenolic brake pistons
- tarozzi fork brace
- APE valve job
- Still to come eventually...Front forks: cartridge emulators racetech
- I still have a stock seat for 2-up riding. Both seats mount with stock hinges

I think that is about it...Thank you for the nomination and all of the help. This is the best online community I have ever been a part of. You really do meet the nicest people riding Hondas!

Congratulations, Chris aka SKTP on winning Bike of the Month for October 2017!!  You were ahead by a landslide and then AlBundy came back to close the gap and run head-to-head with you up to the close finish!  A well-deserved win, as all of the bikes were excellent!!

1 vote margin vs. 50 vote margin still equals a WIN.  Congratulations Chris! Sorry I missed out on riding today. I went out earlier and then caught up with household stuff.
