Kickstart lever swap out
« on: October 30, 2017, 07:53:25 PM »
My CB550k has a 550f pipes and thus a 550f brake arm to fit the piped. This means that the kickstart is kicked it scrapes along the brake arm. If I pull the trigger on a 550f kickstart lever (around $40USD?) will it just be a straight take off/bolt on swap?

Cheers :)

Yep.  Same splines.

The F kicker has an extra bend about it where it will rest upon k model side covers.

So it normally rests on side covers? Mine doesn’t have side covers - is that a problem?

The k lever would go almost straight up and hang near the carbs.  Never touching the side covers.
The f lever’s kink moves it over the frame triangle.  With the small f-series covers, they don’t contact.
I only noticed it as an “issue” because I’ve fit k covers to my f bike.

If you have no side covers, it won’t matter.

I've used one off an RD250LC and an XT or XR , same splines but shorter in length so easier to get your hoof up to the kicking bit. as a bonus it looks a lot less antique then a stock one and its black
i blame Terry

the LC and XT ones are the same so if you can find one go with that, the XR one was slightly longer and straighter from memory
i blame Terry

sorry to shatter this idea for you, but the 550F kickstart wont work with your 550K foot peg - 550F has a folding foot peg which must be folded up before kickstarting and which has a mounting stud on the frame that is unique to the F frame...

Damnit, jonda is right.  The foot peg even presses against the kickstart hinge.  Totally forgot about that.

Drat! Well at least I found out before I pulled the trigger... what now I wonder?

If it doesn’t have to move far, is it feasible to heat up and bend the one that you have?

I may be back to that option.

Doing some eBay checking I may need to tweak you on this at some point. Do you know for a fact that these will fit with 550f pipes and brake arm?

sorry, my bad, I only know these to fit on 750s, if you were closer i'd send you one to try but freight to and from canadia is both prohibitively expensive and slower than a side valve Harley
i'd bet on it fitting on the shaft but as for clearance with the pipes .....
i blame Terry

Problem is as someone pointed out the F needs to have a folding foot peg which only mounts to an F frame so that won’t work. Maybe I’m back to hearing and bending... which a mechanic already tried after I told him not to and now it looks like #$%*

Hmm... does anyone know if the 750 and 550 have the same splines and thus the RD250 LC would work? I see one on eBay but it’s about 80 bones so I’d like to be sure...

funny thing is...I can see this stud that Jonda is talking about on your frame now that we have some pictures to work with

I don't know 550's that well, but that little pin that keeps your footpeg from rotating is the same one a 400f peg uses which I am assuming is the same for 550f.

To confuse matters even more the 750f uses that same little peg to prevent the footpeg from rotating.
If it works good, it looks good...
