After I chewed mine down to a round knob I got my cutting wheel and cut the #$%*er off. Purchased a new larger bolt from 4int01 and never had another problem with that....It sucks when you try and try and you see the bolt just disintegrate.

Mine was kinda buggered up after a couple of decades of abuse. Maybe not quite that bad, but I found if I hammered on a slightly smaller 12 point socket, it would give me enough bite to get it off. I then replaced it with a new bolt at the next oil change.
That is usually my first go to plan also to get those off.

Yeah, I bought a new bolt from 4 into 1.

I’m going to install it when I get this damn one off.

I hurt my hand so I haven’t been able to get a good grip with the vice grip.
When the #$%*tt weather goes away I’m going to try acouple more times. Sprayed some pb blaster so that’s sitting in there.. going to hold a match to the bolt for awhile and then hammer it acouple times before I use the vice grips. If that doesn’t work I’ll hammer a smaller nut into it and try that. If that doesn’t work then I’m gonna Shave it down

I hope your kidding about the match  :) if you are going to heat it a propane torch is what you need. Be careful hammering it too, some taps are good to help break the hold, yet don't be pounding on it. You could end up damaging the lower case where the bolt fastens into the boss and a cracked case isn't any fun.

Rubber mallet won’t do a god damn thing. Use a ball peen hammer. Yes, don’t wail on it. Just use your...uhh scratch that, use MY judgement.

Make sure to use a match from a book. The paper ones burn hotter than the wood ones.

a propane torch is a good tool to have around.  a small bottle is cheap and easily had.

+1 on the pipe wrench, should have one around anyway, just because they are so handy for plumbing too lol...

Well I'm glad you asked Mike! The problem of course is that due to the filter bolt's location it's hard to get an impact driver on it to belt with a hammer, although I've had some success with a pneumatic rattle gun after I've bashed the next size down socket over the remains of the bolt head, and I've probably had more success just lopping the head off with an angle grinder, being careful not to damage the canister.

Years ago I bought several NOS chopper chrome oil filter bolts with 1" head bolts, (none of those poofy 17mm head bolts that you see everywhere now) and of course unless you're a fcuking moron and you stood on the 3 foot breaker bar to tighten it up because you forgot to replace the big O ring and your canister is leaking oil still, you'll never have a problem.

Having said that, I'm pretty sure Honda used the 12mm head so people couldn't overtighten the bolt, and rip out the thread from the lower crankcase, because we all know that some folks shouldn't be allowed to touch tools........... ;D

they may have used the 12 at the factory but folks are still over tightening the bolt.

Sacrifice that bastard and take a Sawsall to it. Oil filter housings are a dime a dozen and you gotta replace the bolt with a 17mm head one anyway. Get it over with.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

DOS I am not sure which way you are pointing. I said lefty loosey and righty tighty back in post #4 that is an old saying that means left turn for loose and right turn for tight and you seem to be pointing to the right. If you have been turning that to the right then your tightening the bolt.
Do you have a propane torch and if so heat that sucker up and crank the vice grip on as tight as you can get it to clamp onto a relatively decent section of that bolt. The problem is you can't get a lot of leverage on an 8-10" length of the vice grip and twist it counterclock wise, to the left to release the bolt.

Do you have other tools at your disposal or are you limited in your tool selection?

Go on Craigslist and find a welder who makes house calls. Have him weld a big nut on that rounded off stump and tell him to unscrew it.

You have many many suggestions on how to get this thing off.

First off file or grind s the vise grip is on more of the stub.
 Mount it  the reverse of how it was in the photo , then you can smack  the right part with the hammer.. carefully.
When mounting the visegrips, get them as tight as you can, they have to bite in..
 And  give the bolt a few raps with the hammer, first.

You're turning it the correct way, i.e. counter-clockwise.  Just like unscrewing the lid of a soda bottle. 

As said above, the vice grips need to be REALLY tight- to the point of crushing/biting into the metal of the bolt head. 

I've been a mechanic all my life and have always thought the phrase "right tighty, lefty loosey" was one that could easily confuse someone.  Because:
