Hello from Montreal, Canada
« on: March 25, 2018, 03:37:58 PM »
Hi everyone,

First bike, first buy. Just got a nice a 1980 CB650, original setup and low milleage (30000km).

Will definitely be scrolling throught all thoses pages of infos everytime something seems to be problematic.

ABOUT THE BIKE :
Bike is in a good shape, all original pieces, little rust here and there, but nothing you wouldn't expect on a 37yr old... Electrical is all working, altought the battery is dead flat.
Engine wise, the carbs are leaking some (more like plenty) of gas, but it does run smoothly, without blue fumes. The bike was running last year, so I guess they just didn't took good care of it during the winter.

MY TO DO LIST :
Just bought a used copy of the Haynes and Clymer, so next is :
-Buy a new battery to make it run
-New gas and oil.
-Try to figure out the state of those carbs (if they need just a tune it or a more complex work)

THE PLAN :
Short term plan for this summer is to make it run and enjoy as many rides as possible during the short canadian summer.

I'll decide what to do with it during next winter...

Would be happy to chat or with other member in my area, if there's any.

Cheers

Welcome MR. G,

Congrats on the new to youbike!
Good starting list of things to initially check/replace although i’d add correct and properly gapped plugs and (although not listed) an oil filter to your list.
Being your first bike, tackling the carb issues can be be tricky. The manual will help, but experience to some degree makes the process a tad easier.
Hopefully you can hook up with a local who has some experience to assist you through some of these issues.
If you decide to farm out the carb work, be sure to find a tech who is familiar with older bikes. Not totally necessary, but IMO it’s best.
Or- remove them and ship ‘em to member here harisuluv and he can do your job.

At any rate, enjoy your bike, ride safe and be sure to keep us posted on your progress or with your questions.

Hello from NE MN,

Drippy carbs could be as simple as stuck float valves.  shut off the gas, drain the carbs,  tap on the bowls,  turn the gas on, then start her up and see if it has improved.
