Topic: XL175 Project Bike

Hey all

Got this 73 xl175 from a family member to work on last summer. Judging by the amount of cosmetic damage I’m not sure the last rider survived! Busted mirrors, busted hand levers, bent break lever and shifter, flat tires, ripped up seat, and no lights.... maybe more I’m not remembering?!? Got all that stuff fixed though and I’m on to the last couple of things...

1. New rear shocks. They are too old and I’m to fat I guess....

2. Add oil to front suspension. I’m also stupid and tied it down to tight. Hoping I can just fill from the top and didn’t do any other damage.

3. Kick start doesn’t return. This is the one I would like some thoughts on. I’m not much of a mechanic, so not sure what I would be getting into here. When kicked it almost never returns. I have to pull it back up manually. And then when it’s in the upright position it has lots of play and wants tends to fall forward when riding. Creates a lit clicking noice when it does that.

So thoughts? Busted spring? How do I repair? Any tips?

Looking forward to forming up the suspension a bit and doing some light trail riding. In a few years when my boy gets a bit bigger I want to let him ride on it. Love this bike and it’s the same color as my 750, so really hoping to get the pair running well.

Having a hard time getting pictures to post. Will try again later. Hopefully at least this one goes through of the finished up first round of work. Looking back at last year's pictures I now rwmeber it leaked gas from everywhere possible and had the wrong exhaust mounting brackets. Fun summer project last year. Hoping to finish it up this year.

This was the first bike I ever owned.
How I would like to find another one, but here in New Zealand most of them have had a hard time and it is neigh on impossible to find one in good condition and with the original exhaust system.
A nice bike.
