Topic: Rewire help

OK so I dug a 1974 CB550 out from behind a friends barn. The motor is free so I figured what the heck. I dont have a title and NY can be a #$%* to get one so I want to make sure I can get this ruining before I embark on a adventure to get a title. That being said I replace the points and got a cheap regulator of ebay. I know not the best option but I don't want to dump a ton in to it yet. I wired so its a kick only so 3 yellows one white red to the battery with a fuse. and the greens are the grounds. Now for the question the black goes to the coil on a switch at some point for now hard wired. Should the black have power is I touch it with a light tester or am I missing something. This is the first time I have ever dove in to something like this and need some direction.

Have you got a wiring diagram for your bike? It is very helpful. And what about the stock wire harness, was it still on the bike? I would not direct wire the hot to the coils without a switch as they get HOT. Try to use the stock harness if available, or get an aftermarket new one, they aren't that expensive. But I understand that you want to get it running to see if it is any good.
I would do a compression check, 3k mile tune up, set the valves, etc. and see what you are dealing with. Probably have to clean those carbs, also... good luck with your 550!

As far as the missing title you can title it in Vermont . I had a 78 750K for 30 years and the title ( never in my name ) was lost . my son and i recently restored the bike and brought it down to a DMV facility on Long Island where i live . they do a VIN # verification. They check the frame and motor serial #'s to make sure nothing is stolen . The path of least resistance is to then send the dmv vin form and the form from dmv in VT. and a few $ and presto ; VT plates and paperwork.  you have to be able to ride the bike into the NY DMV facility though ( don't ask me why ). NY dmv sucks , if you try to get a title in ny the inspector told me something about a bond ! and a lot of time b4 you even get a proper title . Good Luck.
