Who else wishes they were at the Handbuilt Show?
« on: April 21, 2018, 06:58:10 PM »
I know there are a few people who definitely do NOT wish they were there looking at all the motorcycle abominations!  But I for one intended to take my sons down for the weekend, then work got in the way and I just wanted to complain for a minute.

Looks like a good time.

Just left. Couple bikes that were impressive as motorcycles. Ton of brand new, stock off the showroom floor bikes. Couple impressive art pieces on tires. Overall, probably won't waste the $15 next year, and just buy one more beer at the track.

I enjoyed it.  There were a lot of cool bikes, but I don't know about "Hand Built".  Most of them looked like they have never seen a road or even a test ride around a parking lot.

I remember the first year,  there were a lot of bikes that you could tell were actually ridden.  Now it's a professional builder's show.

I've noted that, as well.  I can't really criticize people for it- it is what it is.  It's a show... most of the classic cars at a car show look like they are driven on 10-mile Sundays about 5 times a year.

The thing that bothers me is that if you look closely, half the bikes don't have their battery trays installed or they left the carburetor drain hoses off, breather hoses, etc.  It's a little lame when you've seen a bike written up in 2-3 different articles but a video or photo of it actually running or being ridden doesn't exist.

But it's only a little lame.  I still get juiced just by the design and art aspect of it.  It's clear that people are passionate about their builds and they enjoy it, so it's hard for me to be too cynical about it.  Only grumpy old farts do that.  LOL

It's not like any of these guys are making a million dollars off of some intricate scam.  Even the biggest dogs in the game are barely making a comfortable living off of it.

I just got back to iowa yesterday after the show and motogp.  I took my 400 there.  There were alot of bikes this year.  The variety was cool and you can tell that's the route the revivial boys want to take it.  To be open and big to have a good time and celebrate bike and inspire.  I dug it.

There were a few that didn't run, but to be fair, some of them were down to the wire to be ready.  I did find myself picking some apart in my head but i have to remind myself, it's all about what that person wants/enjoys.  Not me.  I had a great time.

I spent more time looking at that bike than just about all the others. Great work.

That's a mature, evolved way of looking at the custom bike community.  Thanks.  I'd love to be there next year.

Hi Frank..
Thanks for that  Couldn't agree more with the basic premise of that description.  Made me wonder..is it just the old timers among us (probably over 50..especially over 60) that feel that way?  Or are there still a significant number of youngsters (40 & under)..who 'get-it' in terms of working with and making things with our hands?

I spent most of my formative years taking shop classes in Jr. High..High School.  Seems nowadays that none of that is required or considered 'relevant'.  Working with my hands was/is a large part of what helped me remain 'sane' though all of the stuff in the 60's and 70's..I feel..even into retirement in the early 2000's.  My son (born in '80) can't work on his car..fix his lawn mower..or repair the sink plumbing.  But can spend days on end posting stuff to Facebook and YouTube (I separated from his mother when he was 10)  He's 38 now BTW.

Anyway..just saying..I guess.that it would be nice to know that there are still enough of younger generation out there..who are learning/refining their eye-hand skills..in this day and age.
Cheers..

I love everything hand built personally. Im 32 and have always had that old soul about me. My time on earth has been one of transition, in that I grew up with dial up internet at the dawn of the home computer age, had a rotary phone as a kid, but now have an instagram account and do lots of computer work, but have always loved working with my hands. Im of the belief that if you can reasonably create it, you should try. I plan to instill that in my 3-year-old son as well. So, as a Millennial, I get it.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Loved the bike, even with the 2nd rate exhaust.  LOL

The moment someone becomes a “fabricator” they too often become jaded in their assessment of anyone else’s work. Some of us, appreciate greatly the time and effort put into something customized or handbiilt, whilst others eschew that it wasn’t done the way they would.

That’s a tragedy really. Once you believe you have all the answers, you’ve only proved that you’ve stopped asking the right questions. Always something to appreciate or learn from admiring someone else work. You may not care for the result, but, if well executed, then it should yield praise, not complaint.

That is spot on.
