my 75 CB750F SuperSport has a 16" in the rear..why?????
« on: June 05, 2005, 03:28:16 PM »
my 75 CB750F SuperSport has a 16" in the rear, Isn't 18" the stock size for the rear, Why would someone put a 16" on there, what's better 16" or 18"and what the up's and down's on the 16" rear..  right now there's a old GoodYear 5.10-16T (square tire) What size metric tire would I need to run on the 16" rim.. I have  band new Bridgestone Battlax BT45HP/V sitting in the shop front and rear but it's a 18" rear, I want to stay with the 45 and they come in a  16" rear but only in a 150/80/16 and a 130/90/16, what's the best way to go,

18" is stock. How wide is the rim? Normally a 150/80-16 requires a 3.5" rim to work.

Why?
Well, the reasons I've heard...
1) Make it look more chopper like or "different".
2) able to use a wider tire as the rim is wider.
3) lowers the bike
4) Smaller tire easier to turn if the same sprockets are used.  Bike acceleration faster, like changing sprocket ratios.  Engine turns faster given same speed with an 18 inch wheel.

Bridgestone's web site:
http://www.motorcycle-karttires.com/
will tell you what the approved rim widths are for their tires.
150/80/16- (3.50)3.00-4.25 inches
130/90/16 - (3.00)2.50-3.50 inches

These measurements are from bead to bead where they seat.  I don't know what the thickness of your rim walls are.  Maybe somewhere around 1/4 inch each side?

http://www.motorcycle-karttires.com/  If I'm reading this right looks like a 150/80 is for a 6.00-6.25  and a 130/90  is for a 5.00-5.10... Now is that the rim size or the old tire size? Because the old tire is a 5.10 and the rim looks to be about 4' wide

I guess you probably have a Harley Davidson rim...

Here's what I see in the charts (I can't get the columns to line up with this BBoard.  So, you'll have to count off the column headers):

ArticleNumber    TireSize    RimSize    TireDescription    OECode    LoadRating    SpeedRating    O/ADia    TreadWidth    TreadDepth(32's) ApprovedRim    MaxLoad    MaxPSI    O.E.

072664    130/90-16M/C    16    BT45R BW TL    -    67V    V    25.0    5.2    9    (3.00)2.50-3.50    677    43
072524    150/80-16M/C    16    BT45R BW TL    -    71V    V    25.5    6.1    9    (3.50)3.00-4.25    761    43

I don't know what the stock rim width is.  (Somewhere between 2.50 and 3.00, I think)  But, it took a 4.00-18 tire.  Bridgestone says that goes on a rim width of  2.15-3.00.
092630    4.00-18    18    AC02R BW TT    -    64H    H    26.5    4.6    9    2.15-3.00    617    41
Why?  You gonna put a stock rim on it?  (I probably would.  But, that's just me.)

As I read the chart, the 150/80-16M/C will work on a 4" bead to bead rim.
I couldn't get the web site to state what tube to use.  Get that info from who ever you order the tire from.
Make it a "condition of sale".

Your tube should be matched to the tire size. The package usually says what tire sizes it will fit. If you can't get an exact match, get the tube slightly smaller. If you get a larger size tube it may wrinkle or overlap on itself inside the tire which is not a good thing. The slightly small tube will stretch a little to fit the tire.

nobody said nothing about clearance!!
that 150 sounds fat
better check for clearance before getting a fat tire
swingarm?
fender?
chain?
