Hey all.   See photos.   I just torqued down my head and realized my cam chain guide was not loose, not moving and is  under the head. Not free to move around.

To be clear this is my first CB750 rebuild.

I can't recall if that was loose in there or if it was supposed to be underneath the head and firm.
I feel like it being loose might  be a good thing overall for the tension mechanism. But I have no clue.

Please help.  Thanks

There is at least 2 lengths.
I ran into that last summer, tensioner did not move freely,  because I used long one with a later head, (I think)
So I pulled the head, took a very sharp 5 inch or so file. Masked off all the holes.
Then about 3/4 down from top, I filed a notch on each side, till I was well into the steel. Then across the front into the steel and the back. Then broke it off ..filed and cleaned up all the edges.
Then I put the head back on..

You might get in with a zip disc, but don't hit your studs. After the trouble I had getting rings in, I did not want to pull the barrel.

I was able to get it wiggled unstuck however now there is a bit of a ridge on top from where the head compressed it a bit.

I'm not too concerned about this.

That being said how much is that chain guide supposed to wiggle. Is it supposed to be pretty static or is it supposed to have significant give. I can post a video if you would help.

Not a matter of getting it unstuck, it has to move back and forth a bit to work.
I am not sure but being against the head there is probably not where it should sit.

The post-1976 heads all ha the shorter cam chain guide, because Honda's moldmakers left that ig ridge in the middle of the head. I file the ridge off the head, about 2mm or so, with a coarse file while I have the had off. Then it can take either type of tensioner.
