Flake Sunrise Orange - Source or formula
« on: June 26, 2018, 07:23:48 PM »

Hi All-

I am a newbie to this forum and I'm very excited that I happened to find it. Over the years I've own 9 Honda's; from a 1965 160 Dream to a 99 750 Magna.  I then went the Harley route, but they are just not the same and I sold it. My favorites have been the four cylinders.

Two weeks ago, I just purchased an original unmolested 1975 CB550k with very tired original green paint., I want to repaint the bike in Flake Sunrise Orange to match a 550K that I owned in the mid-80's.

I have only found old threads on this topic and am hoping you guys may have updated info and can point me to a source of a correct color paint product, or a formula mix that forum members have found to be as close as possible to the original.

In advance,  thank you much!!!!!   :)
Mike

I think I used Ct70 paint and it was spot on.  Great product.

Some have used VMR kits and some have gone the House of Color and their microflake with Tangerine candy and the silver base coat of course.  Shooting Candy paint is akin to artistry and everything needs painted at the same time to yield consistent results.  Finding a painter good with candy is also tough, much less candy flake paint. Buy enough to practice with if doing it yourself.

I just used Vmr and was quite pleased with the results. Flake Sunrise Orange on a CB750K4.  Color match was good, though the paint is a bit pricey. Worth it to me.  Enjoy your CB!

Another vote for VMR paints.  I can't speak to the flake sunrise orange, specifically, but I used their valley green metallic for my K1 side covers, and I couldn't be happier.  Because it was a small project I went with the pre-mixed spray can, and the volume and spray pattern was as close to an actual HVLP spray gun as I've ever seen from a rattle can.

Thank you sooooo much, Gentlemen.  A high-painter here in Austin encouraged me to stay away from online kits, and I should do well with mixing here locally.  I don't know what his actual experience is with any online vendors you all recommended...probably none. I presume he just wants to fully control the formula so he can honor any warranty work???  Thanks you again, Guys.

If there are more members with input on my paint project, please let me know your thoughts and experience as well!

Have a great summer to ride!

If you have a paint shop that can match paint for you, then that is probably your best bet. Though it seems many have had good experience with VMR paint, I have not; I found that it was not an accurate match for an original Honda color. In my experience, nothing beats an expert eye when it comes to paint. I have shunned paint kits entirely for my last few restorations. I instead go to my local Napa. They mix paint (even the good stuff like House of Kolor) and stand behind their products. I haven't been let down. And its great to able to go back and say "I need more of this exact paint" They can look up the formula they used and mix it right then and there.

For the absolute best results, go to your paint shop with an example of the paint you want. Even if you have to buy something on ebay to reference, that will go miles to getting the best match. Here's an example...

After having a bad experience with VMR's candy ruby red on one of my sandcasts, I found an original paint tank in the same color. The tank itself was junk, but portions of the paint were unfaded. I took that to my paint guy and we discovered some interesting stuff. First, the metallic flake of 1969 that Honda used was extremely fine. Not like the stuff they used later. It was silver and not gold (candy paints are commonly done on top of either silver or gold). Second; what Honda called "Candy Ruby Red" was an exact match to what House of Kolor calls "Candy Apple Red". The match was fantastic (the original tank is in the foreground and the House of Kolor Candy Apple Red is in the background...I could not have been happier!):

Finally, and I do not know why this is, use a white primer under a silver metallic when painting a candy finish. For some reason, this makes a difference with the silver metallic. I can't explain it fully, but I have painted with grey primers under the silver metallic and white primers and there is a difference!

Since original Honda painting process has been brought up, here is the only official paint application that I have seen anywhere. It is from lubritech which was an official ,licensed Co. from Honda allowed to produce paint for Honda motorcycle parts.
White was not a base for the candy ruby red.

Thats correct. The basecoat was a metallic silver. I'm talking about primer. Not sure if thats what Honda did to be clear...but it is what I have found creates the most accurate match.

Yellow and red are very much impacted by primer colors and underlying color of material.  Most reds and yellows are very transparent colors.

Didn't mean to derail the conversation on the white primer thing.

My vote would be to go to a good local paint shop and get the paint matched by a pro.

It is good information for those painting things themselves. I do not view it as a derailment, merely more data important to the conversation.

Candy paints are difficult, one coat too much candy & you have to start over as it is too dark. Being a transparent tint essentially it is a slow build of material and to keep it from coming out striped you have lay down the color in alternating directions, horizontally and vertically.
When it comes out right it is gorgeous.

Thanks again, Guys.  All your great input and information on my project is invaluable.  A couple local Vintage Honda repair shops referred me to Austin Paintworks.

I went to their place to interview them and see their work. The shop itself and the painters were so impressive. They showed me their process and results on 3 tanks they had there. Mere Painters they are not, they are artsts and craftsman,  I provided them the formula you all provided me, as well as high resolution jpegs of the color, and they plan to just nail it.  I take my stuff to them on July 9.

Thank you all for all your help!!!!  Happy 4th!
Mike

I would, but they have become so proud of themselves that a tank and side covers, already bare, will cost $800 around here... :(
