New CB750a owner. This one is a trike!!
« on: July 28, 2018, 07:59:26 pm »
First older Honda motorcycle, actually purchased for my wife. I actually ride a 99 Kawasaki Vulcan 750, but I found this for my wife. Hope I can get a lot of information from this sight. This is a 1976 CB750A dealer installed trike kit with the windjammer fairing. This particular one was used by an escort service for escorting funeral processions and the trikes were rarely used. Has about 34k original miles and runs great. Just have to swap out those trailer wheels on the rear and lower it. I’m sure there will be plenty more I will end up doing, but just from looking at it, that’s first. Any advice is definitely welcome!! If I can get good enough service I will post a couple pics

Welcome here. I think to post pics you need to up your post count, I think 5 is the magic number. So post a couple of bla, bla, bla posts and you are good to go.

Thanks!  I'll knock those out today.  We rode it around a good bit yesterday, I have several questions.  I'll post them here and search for answers too.  Take these questions with a grain of salt though as I have never owned a CB750A or ridden one until yesterday.  The top speed we can get out of it is only 50, and the engine seems maxed out then, that can't be right.  I plan to change the oil and filter hoping to help, as well as looking into swapping out those ugly wheels and tires for something a little lighter.  I think those heavy tires are some of the issue.  If it was only used for escorting funeral processions, it probably wasn't driven very fast so it was never an issue.

Oh, I use Rotella T6 5w40 full synthetic in my Kawasaki Vulcan.  Is that oil good to use in this bike too?

Already purchased some oil filters off of Amazon.  Interesting that it's the same filter as Kawasaki Ninja 250.

**  Got my post count up and pics posted!!

That's quite a rig.....I like it. I wonder who made the body/fender kit. What kind of final drive/differential does it have? Maybe the gearing is restricting the top speed.

I haven’t found any info on it yet. I was told it was a dealer I staled kit. Has a really big (haven’t counted teeth yet) sprocket. I’ll try to get some pics and post them up.

I have the fairing removed and all the missing parts for the front should be here today.  I was able to change the oil and rebuild the carbs this weekend, that got it up to 65 mph.  Runs a lot smoother now.  Looking and talking to people on facebook groups about other Hondamatic trikes, I think the issue is the gearing on the sprockets.  Mine is 17 front and 52 rear, I think it would probably be a good idea to replace both sprockets and chain since I have no idea how hold they are and going with a new 17 front and a 42 rear.  That way if it's too high geared I can drop the front down one or two or go up one more if I have to.  What do y'all think?

The original sprockets were 17/48,  I think your 17/42 is going to be a little too extreme. The matics don't have a lot of grunt and the convertor will help, but I don't think you'll be pleased with that ratio. Just my thoughts.....

Thank you.  I haven't ordered anything yet, so nothing is quite set in stone.  Thanks for the info.

That's the one I bought.  I contacted him through facebook, guess he just hasn't taken down his craigslist ad.
