750 Advancer shaft truing (best method)
« on: August 16, 2018, 03:56:39 PM »
Like the title says.. I decided to try to straighten mine, but don't want to ruin it in the process. What do you guys recommend
as the best way? I have a HF dial indicator with a base kit that is rather cumbersome to use, but will give it a try. I'm thinking
the use of a brass hammer to persuade things back to true? Shaft will stay in crank, but it's removeable for truing if that is
the consensus. Recommendations appreciated. Correct timing is difficult due to this condition, even with TEC components.
May have gotten tweaked during rebuild. Thanks....

Try to mount indicator to motor or frame.
Pull the plugs so it turns over easily..
The end of a wooden  hammer handle , is probably safe to hit it with..

I straightened a new shaft as 754 describes during engine rebuild last year. Shaft straightened while installed, using a dial indicator with base mounted to engine case using a small c-clamp and some wood shims to protect the case. A little fiddly to setup but it worked. Light taps with a plastic mallet (brass hammer should be okay too) to true, just don't go crazy with it. It doesn't take much to show a change with the small distances you're working with. I called it good enough with about 0.002" runout towards the end of the shaft, just before threads starts.

I used a plastic mallet and a dial indicator. Very light taps, it’s pretty fragile. I’ll never turn the engine with the nut there again, it’s too easy to throw it off again. Of course, plugs out. You can use the back tire to turn the engine too. Mine was quite a bit off when I started

Thanks gentlemen. I was able to get within .002, and called it good. Once the magnetic indicator base was secured to a heavy metal object, flat on the floor, and bike on centerstand it was a straight shot upward till the indicator touched the shaft. This turned out to be a lot easier than I anticipated 8)
