Bearing within clutch Lifter Plate?
« on: August 25, 2018, 03:23:28 PM »
Working on a 1978 Cb750.

I broke apart the clutch to address my clutch not disengaging and allowing me to shift gears. I also can not spin the back wheel when the clutch lever is fully gripped. I have adjusted the clutch cable and I have tension at the lever but no engagement of the clutch.

I found this ball bearing in my shop and it fits very well in the Lifter plays. Curious as to if this is my missing piece to help my clutch disengage and allow me to spin the rear wheel when the clutch lever is pulled.

Pictures posted.

I can’t post a picture, but if someone can confirm there is a bearing that’d be perfect.

Or If anyone has an idea around what I’ve got wrong.

Yes, there's a throw-out bearing. The clutch works kinda backwards to what I first imagined from looking at it: the springs pull the pressure plate at the "bottom" of the plate stack outwards, to disengage it the centre gets pushed in from the outside. The cam unit in the clutch cover pushes against the throwout bearing: the mechanism should be adjusted so it isn't pressing against the bearing with clutch fully engaged so that the bearing isn't working all the time you're riding - only when you're pulling the lever and disengaging the clutch. If you leave that bearing out, the clutch will always be engaged.

I have the bearing listed as item#17 but there is a small hole at the center of that part. I am curious if a stand-alone ball beating sits in the center of that piece.

Best way to describe it is - if you have the bearing act as a doughnut, is there another single ball bearing that fills that void?

I am hearing probably not..

Cup piece number 10 fills the bearing hub for the lifter to bear on.

Do you mean you have a single ball? It may have come from the lifter cam assembly on the inside of the clutch cover.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Alright. Sounds like the single ball bearing I have is from some other object in the shop. Thanks guys. That is what I assumed, but wanted to confirm before the next steps in problem solving this clutch.

Look at the pic I posted. Notice the triangular piece with three balls? Make sure the loose ball didn't come from there.

Here's a pic showing how the triangular part with the three balls fits onto the cover.
