Seems rather pointless on a stock bike, where I would just get parts from eBay or wherever. On the other hand, Voxonda did this with his endurance racer so he could get more ground clearance on the left side. I think he runs his alternator off the countershaft sprocket.

My thoughts exactly. I would think that the costs of the alternator and all the needed materials would cost more than the used parts to repair it. If it was done to provide extra output, it might makes sense. Maybe he wore heated clothing all the time.

 My brothers friend has spent years trying to put an external alternator on his gl1100. what's the point of that when he could be riding.

i've also seen this done running the alternator off the final drive chain with a sprocket on it

all i can say is as far as i know it worked

EDIT....just remembered it was on a british chopper from the 80s that had a speedway engine with no charging system

A couple hundred of those mounted on the rear tire should be able to keep up with the ignition and charge the battery. ;)
