Which electronic ignition?
« on: December 23, 2018, 09:22:15 AM »
Just found out my dyna 3 control module is shot. I need the part number for the complete setup. Plate and control module. Coils optional I suppose.

I have a Dyna III as well. Got lucky and found a "black box" after mine failed (pickups were fine). The Dyna III is no longer available from Dyna (nor are parts for them), so I would likely switch to a different ignition in the event I have another component failure. Many good choices out there:

>Pamco
>Dyna S
>Hondaman
>CycleX

You'll get opinions about all of them, but AFAIC any of them are adequate when properly set up. Some of them aren't much more expensive than a loaded points plate from Honda so any argument about "electronic failure" is easily justified by simply carrying a replacement ignition plate. I run an electronic ignition but carry a loaded points plate on extended rides and can be back up and running in about 20 minutes.

Why do I keep seeing conversion kits without the ignition booster box? Is it required?

Am I correct in thinking dyna 3 systems use an ignition booster and dyna s systems do not?

Yep, most electronic ignitions, Dyna S included, don't use an extra box these days.

LOL!

I've got about 40,000 miles on mine, although I did replace the "black box" once already. When mine failed it would only run on two cylinders when cold and then would start firing on all four once warmed up. Took forever to warm up by the way!

As Sean indicated, many systems are designed without any type of external controller, except maybe for Hondaman's ignition, which repurposes the points to serve as simple "triggers" without subjecting the points to high voltage arcing. Points can last almost indefinitely with his setup and in the event of a transistorized failure (quite rare from what I understand) you simply unplug the transistorized box and reconnect the points directly and you're back in business. I have one of his ignitions and will likely use it on my next build.

Get Pamco or Hondaman's ignition.  Forget Dyna.

New fully loaded points plate direct from Honda for $85:

https://www.hondapartsnation.com/oemparts/p/honda/30200-300-154/points-assy-toyo

New Pamco ignition for $120:

https://4into1.com/pamco-electronic-ignition-honda-cb500-cb550-cb750/

Minimal price differential. Buy one of each and you're covered in the event of a component failure. Add a Hondaman ignition to compliment the points for $78 for the best of both worlds:

http://sohc4shop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=23&products_id=32

Be advised, if you switch back to points you will need a points cam too since the Dyna III (or any non points electronic ignition for that matter) require that the points cam be removed from the advancer plate in order to fit the electronic trigger to the advancer shaft.
