2019 SOHC4 Family Reunion - Mid Ohio July 4th Weekend
« on: February 19, 2019, 09:47:39 AM »
2 years ago with the encouragement of other members here I organized the inaugural SOHC4 Family Reunion. It was held in Dolores Colorado and a very good time was had by all.

For my part I turned it into a 2 week, 4,700 mile trip from Chicago out to Colorado then back home via Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri. It was a truly epic trip.

I was already planning a long trip this summer to the Carolinas to visit friends and family with a swing back through Ohio July 4th weekend to attend the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days in Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, OH.

I mentioned this in another thread over the weekend and got some positive response, so I am just going to make it official. The CB750 is the featured marque this year as it celebrates it's 50th anniversary, so it seems fitting to make this event the location of a reunion event. It doesn't have to be the only event, but it's the one I am willing to help plan this year.

VMD is a very popular event attended by thousands of people each year. So there isn't a lot of time to waste in trying to put something together.

If you are interested please add a comment here and I will get on sourcing a place where we might stay in a group, but for a group reservation I need numbers. We won't have a lot of time here and will likely need to book someplace within the next week or 2 to guaranty a spot.

Here's a link to the event: http://www.amavintagemotorcycledays.com/

I go every year with my bro and dad and camp on site. I would love to bring a bike or 2. Is there a spot for us to show our bikes? If we could arrange a tent area in the infield to set up shop for a "symposium of all things SOHC CB750" I would throw some money in to help with the cost of space. I could scrounge up at least 2 bikes to show (race bike and stocker)

I am perfectly fine with camping. As far as I know Mooshie is the only member who draws a hard line at camping and only stays in hotels (which I totally get, I only camped 1 night of the 13 I was on my trip to the first reunion event).

If we all just camp at the venue then we should be able to have our own little mini-CB750 show. Richard Backus from Motorcycle Classics magazine is a friend of the SOHC4 community (forum member SkonnieBoy (Anders) has written several articles for them over the past few years). I suspect if we reached out they would come take some pictures. MCM might also be at Motoblot in June (last year was their first year attending) and if they are I can talk to Richard then.

I did some checking around to see if I could find a nice campground with cabin options like we had in Dolores, but I didn't find anything that I would consider close. There are a number of close hotel options, but don't wait to long to make your reservation.

I am going to be on the tail end of a 2 week trip with a few days in NC with friends and a few in SC with relatives, a weekend of camping at the end shouldn't be a problem.

You might try contacting Richard before June, as that wouldn't give him much advance notice. ;)

It would be interesting to ride the 750 there (and back).  I'll keep an eye on this.

Rose and I discussed and were pretty positive we can join.  For sure would need to figure out hotel stuff (or camping) sooner than later.

I'd love to ride the 750 out, but Its not at all set up for luggage...so would need to consider

Mansfield has a very nice Carousel, in case you like the painted ponies... Makes for a nice photo if you can get close enough with your bike with the carousel in the backdrop. Lots of shops as well if they haven't changed things since I was last there.
The rates for the weekend at the Comfort Inn or Quality Inn in Mansfield jump significantly for the event weekend (typical). Rates are around $159/night or $162/night if you choose to get additional rewards points through Choice's reward program. I was looking at the two queen bed rooms with double occupancy, splitting a room with another person cuts that to $85-90 when tax is piled on (most likely.)
These rates are with Mid Ohio's discount applied.
To bring the 550 it is going to need a motor rebuild...can I do it before July?

Going North or South on I-71 a little, you will find a lot of hotels for cheaper than right around Lexington or Mansfield
I live about 80 miles North of the track and ride down there very day. A nice 1¼ hour ride.
You will find less expensive hotels in Medina.
There is a shared display this year again like in 2009 (30 year anniversary) between the CB750 SOHC Club (whoever that is) and the ICOA (CBX Club)
1973 CB350F -sold
1974 CB350F -218 orig miles, sold
1976 CB750K - in restoration

Other Hondas:

northern suburbs of Columbus are only about 60 miles away....price drop in room is in the $100 range instead of $160 range. Worth it to have a hour ride for that savings, unless that is an hour's ride in the rain...  Lots of great places to eat in Columbus area as well.

I've mentioned in other posts I'm planning to attend, the guy that assembled mine and his 69 750's is riding his out. I'm stuck between riding with him, taking 2 or 3 on an open trailer, or towing my 28' trailer and camping in it.

If you check out the website be aware, the schedule of events is still the 2018 one.

No, not dead, but I have neglected it for a little while. I will try to take some time to put together a summary post tonight of the responses I have received. I am also going to go over to the main SOHC4 board and create a thread with a link here.

Just saw this thread today!  Glad you posted a link in the general thread.  Dash's engine is back after a rebuild by Hondaman (that reunion you organized in 2017 beat the hell out of poor Dash--7,500+ miles  ;D)  Now i have to put him back together and ride.
I am definitely interested and their are others who don't like to camp Frank--or sleep in a ditch by the side of the road--or repair a carburetor under a pine tree--or...
