How Long?
« on: February 23, 2019, 05:09:34 AM »
I am having my 1978 CB750F 4 into one exhaust cerecoated silver to simulate chrome. (It was cerecoated black by PO, which I hated). Obviously the exhaust is off the bike. How long do y'all think I have before my carbs turn to sludge from the gas of today? I treat with Startron Enzyme, which could be factor. I try to run my bikes up to operating temperature at least 1X per 2 weeks. Thanks for all input.

Mine sit all winter here in Michigan and start back up in the spring with no additives to the fuel so I think you do not need to worry about it.  You can always drain the float bowls and leave them dry as an option but may dry out old rubber etc..

Because different areas gave different gas stations (oil companies)
And up North some brands  change the Mic for certain parts of the year.
Amounts of ethanol vary among brands and regions...
And some places still carry premium with lead   but not everywhere. .

...and the weather, humidity, and temperature changes all have drastic effects on gasoline, especially the stuff with ethanol in it...

The only leaded premium in this country is race gas. I thought Canada outlawed it even in airplanes, that was why NHRA stopped the national event. We couldn't bring in race gas with lead.

If you think the carbs will clog up during the winter. Try fuel additive.
https://www.redlineoil.com/si-1-complete-fuel-system-cleaner
One bottle enough for 3 tanks. 1/3 in tank, fill it up with gasoline. Take bike for a short ride to ensure carbs have the mixture. Hibernate and suffer all winter until spring arrives with sunshine and singing small birds wake you up 8)

My bike has not clogged up carbs yet wintertime. It has good fuel, Shell V-Power with max 5% ethanol. It seems to have other oily additives.
Drain bowls, really OK? The carbs will dry and might leave clogging additives, residues... I'm sure the pilot circuit and float valve will suffer first.

My carbs clogged up really good on old good fuel from 1990. Bowls not drained. It had a bad red slime  residue when I looked inside bowls 20 years later. Tank is on the shelf with same fuel in. I'll might clean it one day.

You treated with Startron so don't worry about it. You are only talking a couple of weeks anyway and you wouldn't even need to treat for that short of a period. I have one of my bikes in cold storage (2009 Kawasaki) and it is topped to the brim with no ethanol gas with seafoam and a battery tender. I try to keep the old bikes in the heated garage. That Kawasaki has been sitting for 4 months... :o

I think that you'll be ok.  I don't treat over winter in NE Ohio and nothing gums up over winter.  When I went back to school, I hired a guy to mow my lawn to save some time.  I forgot to do anything with my push mower.  After 2 1/2 years it fired right up with no issues.  I didn't mean to do that and I won't let it happen again, but it makes me feel better about letting them go for a few months in winter.
