Terry's Redneck RC51 rebuild.

Hello, my name is Terry, and I am an addict. There, I said it, I'm sure it's written somewhere that the first step in any 12 step program is to admit that you're an addict, not that I really care much about the other 11 steps, because, well, if this is an addiction, I don't want to be cured?

Okay, so what's this all about? Terry's already got two other projects that haven't really gone anywhere in the last 12 months, and now he's taken on another one? WTF? Will he ever finish one of them? More importantly, will he ever even start one?

The answer is, well, I hope so. On a positive note, my big zero turn mower is now alive and almost finished, I installed my 23 HP (650 cc) Briggs V Twin last week to replace the blown up 17(?) HP Husky single, and I was 'rapt that everything pretty much bolted right up, and better still, when I hooked up the battery (that was still holding a charge) the Briggs engine fired right up! A bit smokey, and too loud with straight out pipes, but the hydraulics work, I thinkk the electric clutch works, so as I was able to turn the key and ride it around my backyard, I called it a success.

Anyhoo, we're talking bikes here, not mowers. Now as you all know, I've owned a Honda VTR1000R SP1, or as they're known in the USA, an RVT1000R RC51. I traded my old 836cc K1 "Bitsa" for it in 2017, and I love it. Its awesome, small, fairly light, and in it's day, wickedly fast, the RC51 was designed as the "Ducati Killer", Honda's 1000cc V Twin road racer that took back the World Superbike crown from Ducati in it's first season, in 2000.

Mine's not "Minty", it's been down the road at least once I reckon, there's no damage but a little ding on the tank, but it's wearing "fast glass" (repro fairing and plastics) which is usually an indication that it's been dropped. No matter, I'm not a rivet counter, and I do like that at least one previous owner has spent big bucks on a lot of very expensive after market "go fast" items. I'm always keeping an eye out for good parts for it, so got excited when I saw an ad on FB last week for some SP1 parts a guy was selling after his bike was destroyed courtesy of a Kangaroo taking him out @ 60 MPH.

Turns out Boris (his real name) is a nice bloke who was gutted that his SP1 was wrecked. I'm guessing that it wasn't insured as it's not listed as an insurance "Write Off" anywhere, which may work in my favour later in the project. Boris was in need of a VTR1000F engine (these suckers are a little bit fragile and his engine had passed away due to a failed cam chain tensioner) and I just happened to have a spare VTR1000F engine that had only done 17000 Km (10,000 miles) so we agreed that I'd give him my engine plus $500 ($350 USD) for the remains of his SP1.

The logistics of this swap was that he lives 500 miles away, so yesterday we met in a little town called Orbost, at roughly the halfway mark, and did the exchange. I was originally just expecting the engine, rear wheel and swingarm, but once I told Boris that my intent was to get his bike back on the road again, he gave me every last nut and bolt that he still had for it. Sadly the plastics were all destroyed, as were the forks, but that's OK, they were later model CBR1000RR forks anyway, so not what I wanted. The frame looked OK, but sadly was cracked quite badly thru the TIG welds around the steering head.

The tank is similarly damaged, it still holds fuel but is well grazed on one side, but as SP1 tanks are as rare as rocking horse manure, I'll fix it. This is a pic I took as I was unloading all the bits last night, after 10 hours driving.

Tonight I took a look inside all the boxes that Boris gave me, and was pleasantly surprised at the amount of cool parts therein, there was even a Power Commander III in amongst the box of electrics, which is great, I've got one on my other RC51 and I know they're worth a few hundred bucks. Sweet!

There was also tons of tools, and an owners manual! I love these engines, I always assumed that apart from the gear driven cams and fuel injection they're pretty much just a VTR1000F engine with a few magnesium covers, but in fact, they're completely different, even the engine mounts are located in different places on the engine, and while the swingarm still pivots off the back of the engine, it's also located thru the frame, unlike the "F".

Well, the back one did, the front one (actually off a CBR1000RR) had been chewed unmercilessly and both Boris and I was impressed that it still holds air. It'll do to push the bike around until I find a better one.

Push it around, you ask? Yep, I've already bought another frame from the US, and a pair of forks for a 2001 CBR900RR which I think are the same as SP1 forks, so in the next couple of weeks, I'll have it back together as a rolling bike, albeit without any bodywork, until I can find some more money, my funds from the sale of my XR500RE are all but a memory after splurging on mower parts and SP1 bargains, but hey, that's OK, one day it'll look as good as my other one! Well just to keep this thread bubbling along, last week I bought a pair of 2001 CBR929RR forks that I was happy to see slid straight into my RC51 triples, they are a little different from the "Unobtainium" items, but they're close enough until, one day, I find the correct ones. Same/same for the brakes, I bought a pair of calipers, braided lines and an MC from another guy, along with new brake pads from ebay, and it's all looking good. All I need now is that RC51 frame that's slowly winging it's way over from the US, and I can build me a roller! ;D

So Boris, the guy I bought/traded the RC51 wreck from contacted me to say that he thought he'd accidentally put the front axle from the bike he's building in with my RC51 parts, so could I check? Yep, there were 2 axles, identical, except for the size of the spacers.

I asked Boris which one was his, and he couldn't remember, so I decided to try each one on my forks/wheel combo to see which best fitted mine,  and I assumed that his would then obviously be the other one.

This one, was the winner. it centred both discs exactly the same distance between each brake caliper mount on the fork lowers, without any lateral play.

But then I realised that I was using different forks than the ones that Boris had on the RC51 before they were wrecked in the crash, and so there was no guarantee that the narrower spacer would fit Boris' setup either. Bugger. OK, nothing for it, but to fire up the lathe.

Actually I like small jobs like this, they don't take a lot of time to do, and as long as I "measure twice and cut once" I usually end up with a good result. This one turned out fine.

So I was able to set up my new front end using the RC51 front wheel in CBR929RR forks, in the RC51 triples, and was happy that the CBR brakes went straight on. All in all, a good job, and I was able to send Boris the axle with both spacers, and he can decide which best suits his setup. ;D

Ha ha, for what I paid for this one Larry, I'm stupid like a fox! It's interesting how CB750 values have rocketed in the last few years, what I offered the seller was what he actually paid for it 10 years ago, when it was a running bike. Good thing is I've got most of the missing pieces, and even if that engine is seized (I'm sure it will be) I only need the cases to be intact, so I can swap the guts from my F engine that I had in my K2 "Bitsa", because my F engines cases are damaged.

Anyway, more parts, more food for thought. I've been tracking my RC51 frame's shipping from the US, it's here in Oz now, hopefully it'll be delivered tomorrow or the next day, because I'm really keen to start bolting the rolling chassis together. I need to make room in the garage for my son's shiny new Royal Enfield 650, and with all of the parts taking up as much space on the floor as a complete rolling bike, parking space is at a premium! ;D

No, he's a great kid mate, he told me that I can ride it whenever I want to, I think he only bought it so we can go riding together? What I'll do is get him to give me a hand to move my VTR1000F and Yamaha FJR1300 over to the storage place where I've got my Triumph Rocket III, Honda VFR750 and BMW K100RS stored. I've got enough room in the 20 foot shipping container for at least 2 more bikes, so no biggie. ;D

Ha ha, seriously mate, he'd probably fill both bikes and insist that he pay for all the fuel. I honestly can't remember ever having an issue with him, I wish I was more like him! ;D

G'Day Larry, no I haven't ridden one since that one ride in February. Tim paid the deposit on a new one and was told it'd be 3-4 weeks before it arrived. That was on February the 16th? So Tim has been calling them every week to find out where his bike is.

Last week they got back to him and told him they had a black one (not the one he ordered, but close enough) just arrived, so we drove over on Saturday, and the fcuking bike shop was closed? Yeah, I know it's Easter, and yeah, we probably should have called first, but all the other shops were open, so that pissed us both off. No matter, we'll go back tomorrow, and if Tim wants it, we'll take it home.

Regardless, I really liked it, I prefer the more upright riding position of the Interceptor, but Tim is young and fit, and prefers the sportier look of the Continental GT, which is still way more comfy to ride than my RC51! ;D

Well as I mentioned previously, back on February 16 Tim ordered a new black Royal Enfield 650 Continental GT. He put his money down and the salesman told him his new bike would be in Oz in 3-4 weeks. Last week, when he called to ask where the fcuk his bike was for the third or fourth week in a row, they told him that a new "Chrome Tank" bike had just arrived, was he interested in that? Why not, as winter draws nearer, we both wanted some riding time! We had a false start on Saturday when we drove over to the bike shop, only to find it closed for Easter. Great.

Today was better, the shop was open, the bike was there to look at, so Tim and I piled into the spare Hyundai and drove over there. We spotted the new bike as soon as we walked in the door, and we both liked what we saw.

I'm continually impressed with the quality of finish, the "Chrometank" is the most expensive model, $500 more than the bike that Tim ordered, but I've always liked the idea of a chromed tank, so the chrome/black combo with gold (hand painted) pinstripe appealed to both of us.

Now of course we were both hoping the dealer was gonna give us the bike for the same price as the one that Tim ordered (that still hasn't arrived) but that wasn't gonna happen, so instead we wangled a deal on some really good wet weather riding gear for Tim, a new jacket and trousers for half the dealers cost price, so we both thought we'd had a win. Good thing is this bike hasn't even been test ridden yet, the Pirelli Phantom tyres (remember them?) were unmarked with all of the tyre mould tits still in place, so it goes to "VICROADS" (the DMV) tomorrow, and as Thursday is a public holiday (ANZAC Day) we'll pick it up on Friday afternoon. Hopefully it won't piss down rain on me on the ride home, I'm always nervous riding someone else's bike anyway, and I'd hate to bin Tim's bike on it's maiden voyage! ;D

Ha ha, thanks Ken, well now I'm 55 Kg (121 pounds) lighter than I was 6 months ago my "member" looks massive, even with my extraordinarily large hands! ;D

Well to turn the conversation back to things between our legs that are always hard, I'm happy to report that my RC51 frame arrived today. Woohoo! Of course, there's always a little rain on most parades, so I wasn't impressed when I saw how well the Ebay seller had "packed" it..........

Interestingly, the only difference I can see between an Aussie VTR1000R SP1 and an American RTV1000R SP1 frame is that the American one is black and the Aussie one is silver (natural aluminum) but I also noticed that the US one has ball bearings in the steering head, while the Aussie one has tapered roller bearings? I suppose the Aussie one could have been retro fitted with aftermarket bearings, but whatever, the ball races in the US frame were rusty as, so I popped the shells out of each frame, and swapped the tapered shell into the US frame. Sweet.

So it didn't take long before I had a front end back in the frame!

Remember when we were kids and most of the bicycle repairs/fine tuning was done with our bikes upside down? Well that's how I decided to install the swinger and rear wheel, side stand etc, because the fcuking thing kept wanting to fall over, the frame weighs hardly anything, so the front end probably weighs two or three times as much. Upside down worked for me!

The hardest thing was to locate all of the bits for the rear suspension setup from the 4 boxes of parts that Boris gave me, then work out how to set it up (OK, I eventually cheated, I looked at my "good" SP1) just as it started to rain. Luckily I got it all together and can now at least push it around, which is good. One problem is that the swingarm pivot actually goes thru the back of the engine so I'm not quite sure how I'll install the engine without dropping the swingarm back out again, but where there's a will, there's a youtube video, hopefully. We'll see.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Hey Terry. Just wondering if the  bike can be registered here  ?
Heard stories of people bringing in bikes as parts and after reassembly couldn't register.
