Need help identifying a couple bicycles I bought
« on: April 13, 2019, 07:37:41 PM »
Picked up two bikes and a Kreitler roller chassis at an auction a couple weeks ago.  The chassis is fairly well made and the owner even made an adapter so it can be easily moved.   Here are a couple pics of the chassis, which I can identify because I can read ::)  Need help with the two bikes, photos to follow....Larry

Both bikes are very light and are fitted with  good components.  Only identifying marks on this coaster style bike is Ritchey on the stem and the serial number 41. Simplex, Mavic and Dura Ace components.  This was mounted on the roller chassis

The other bike only has serial number 43 but no other markings other that component identification.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Weird that there aren't any manufacturer markings.  I am  hoping both may be Ritchey bicycles....Larry

Wow, I consider myself an Uber bicycle nerd and those have me stumped. What I can say though, is the components are really nice, as are the lugs and construction. You have two really cool bikes there! Watching with interest...

Don, I used to have a Kabuki and Fuji a looooooong time ago.  I think I paid close to 200 each, used them to deliver Western Union telegrams(remember them?).

Any chance they are Ritchey?  You are right about the components, good stuff and seemingly well cared for.  I picked up both bikes and the trainer for a tad under 30$ at a local auction.  Is there a special air chuck to fill the tires?  Nothing I have fits the skinny arse air stem.

Thanks for looking guys....Larry

It's a presta valve, adaptor us about 1.50.
Start looking up Ritchey bikes, things like the brazed lugs and serial number location , May solve the problem.

If I were you, I would consider reaching out to the folks at richeylogic through the company website.

You could also try posting something on twitter and tag @Richeylogic and maybe include a closeup of the Richey logo and serial number.  I would think that would generate some interest/dialogue.

Also, Mike Wolfe from American Pickers is a bicycle fanatic.  You could try that route too (company is Antique Archaeology).

Thanks Robbo,   twitter out of the question for me.  I do have a local source, when my friend recovers from his surgery we'll head over to his shop.  An attempt to contact Ritchey will be made.

The Presta adapters came yesterday so I'll inflate tires(hopefully they'll hold air) and give them a ride if it ever stops raining.

Thems nice looking bikes Larry, looks like you got a bargain! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

The Pedal on SN43 has a mark from France....It kind of reminds me of some of the old Peugeot Bicycles.  They also came with Simplex Shifters

Kind of like this pic.....the faded decals are similar on the midframe

Also a lot like this one....https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vintage-bicycles-whats-worth-appraisals/1088808-peugeot-id.html

Jeff at Ace Motorcycles gave me an old Peugeot bicycle like that one many moons ago. Jeff was wrecking motorcycles back then, and quite often he'd come to work and a motorcycle would be leaning against his gate where an owner had just dumped it there overnight, thinking it was not worth trying to sell to him. (Before the internet)

Anyway, I saw the yellow Peugeot leaning against his fence and he told me it'd been dumped and once his big rubbish skip was empty he'd dump it, so I asked if I could have it, and he said, "sure". Its still in my garden shed, I must pull it out and put some new tyres on it, and do some pedalling! ;D

I own a Peugot too, which was purchased at a local auction.  I'll get some photos up of it.  I was able to contact someone at Ritchey bikes. I need to send him some photos, he seems quite excited to see them.   Thanks for the help y'all...Larry

I don't think one of your photos posted CBJoe

Ha ha, I was watching youtube tonight and came across a heap of vids of guys with as many as 8 small 2 stroke engines in their bicycles, and I wondered if I could squeeze some more into mine? ;D

That's too bad but I'm not surprised. The lug work doesn't look like anything special. The Simplex (French) parts aren't common and they were pretty good so maybe worth getting fixed up.

I knew Tom Ritchey back in the late '70s when he was building frames out of his garage. I was learning frame building a bit out of a shop at my college -- I modified the rear triangle of my Raleigh frame that I still have -- and Tom was friendly with one of our shop instructors/buds named Geno. Tom was modding my forks for me and he fkuced them up so he made me new forks. Still have them on the Raleigh. We used to worry about Tom inhaling too much cadmium in his shop!

Well,
If I could ID the BB, then we'd have a better idea where to start. The top bike is a collection of parts. Thats a reynolds fork i believe (circa 80's) and its a track bike frame . It looks incredibly like a early 80's Panasonic track frame, thus the shimano components. Tapered crank is also within that time frame as well. Mavic rims on what kinda hubs? Look closely at the front and rear dropouts, mfgers name should be on them if theres not to much paint build up. Measure the diameter of the seat post that'll help narrow it down as well. If the fork is a Renolds it'll have it lightly stamped on the right tube or on the crown or both as well as the dropouts, but excessive paint build up can make it difficult to see. Lastly check for thread type on the head set and or BB. If its european it could have english or french italian thead types. Depends on age of the bike.
The 2nd bike is a quandry as well, (both have very common frame lugs) it has a combination of simplex (mainly peugeot) and stronglight conponents. Again see if you can ID the dropouts,
The brakes look like campy, but I can't tell from the picture. The rear hub is dated, looks to be a 5 speed freewheel. Its got touring gearing. If its a freewheel its ancient. The rear hanger is not a peugeot type, peugeot rear hangers never looked like that, maybe a simplex hanger as well, it to looks to be early 80's type. What kinda hubs does it have front and rear, if its peugeot, it'll have malliard or hellicomatic hubs. Malliard equals older, hellicomatic equals newer. Neither were very good.
Also, one last thing, wheel spacing. Older bikes had 100mm spacing up front and 110 in the rear. If either have 110mm spacing up front its a newer frame (mid 80's and on). The rear spacing can be difficult to determine due to the fact that people will shove a 120mm spaced hub in a 110mm spaced frame bending the rear wheel stays and then who knows what it really was unless you can ID the frame mfger and year of mfg. These types of bikes are like these types of motocycles, just 'eye of the beholder' stuff. One mans junk is another mans treasure.
Start with the end in mind...

Thanks for taking the time Mark, some of your nomenclature is Greek to me :P.  What is BB?  and dropout?   I'lll pull the bikes out and see if I can answer some of your questions.  I appreciate the time spent...Larry
