Gas Leaking ?
« on: April 20, 2019, 02:57:20 PM »
I am a new member and am rebuilding a 74 CB 550 but I am experiencing an apparent fuel leak - l have enclosed a photo showing no less than 5 lines near the bottom of the bike. Out of one of these lines I believe gasoline was flowing out of one of these lines. Any experience with this would be most appreciated.

Thanks - Mel Pointer

Not the correct forum for questions, it will probably get moved to SOHC/4 Bikes soon.
But this is a common problem. Almost certainly the carb float valve is leaking. There are "fixes" like tapping the carb bowls with a screwdriver handle or opening the drain on each bowl and flowing a bit of fuel out: if a tiny bit of crud is lodged in the valve that may flush it through.
Check your tank inside for rust or some dirty fuel, make sure the petcock filter is on good shape (usually a fine mesh sock thing inside the tank over the fuel pickups). You can add an inline filter but many members have a major shunner going against these... I've used them on a lot of bikes and had no problems I would blame the filter for.
If none of that helps, the valves can be replaced - carbs have to be removed unless you're blessed with tiny double-jointed hands. Use genuine Honda replacement float valves unless you really enjoy pulling and reinstalling carbs, the aftermarket ones can be a lot of trouble.
Possibly a damaged bowl overflow tube but this is uncommon. If it keeps dripping a long time after the petcock is closed that's a possibility.
