Bike will start but not re-start
« on: May 24, 2019, 09:28:26 AM »
My 81 CB650 has an electrical gremlin of some sort.  This morning it started right up (battery was on a tender all night) and I went out for a joyride.  15 minutes later, at a stoplight, I let out the clutch too quickly in 1st gear and accidentally killed the motor.  Immediately tried to re-start and...nothing...would not turn over.  Pushed it to a hilly side street, roll-started it and rode back home with no issues.  Turned it off at home and again, would not turn over.  Removed the battery and it tested 12.73V on my multi-meter, which I understand to be fully charged.  So I have a fully charged battery that will start a cold engine but not a warmed-up engine.  Any ideas, experts?

Measure the voltage while it is trying to turn the engine over.

One possibility is that your starter draws too much power due to faulty/worn bearings in it.  This allows the armature to flop about and ground out to the frame.  This will greatly increase current demand, and can pull a lot of power from the battery, to be seen as low volts.

Be aware that worn batteries can lose plate area over time.  These can show full charge but be unable to deliver starting currents.  They show the same low voltage when a good starter is engaged.

To eliminate a possibility have your battery tested under load.  If it delivers rated power under test, yet the volts drops below 10v with starter engaged, look toward your starter motor.

Does solenoid click with button pushed ?
Use screw driver as jumper on solenoid terminal next time.
