Doggie people... a disaster, opinions please !
« on: May 27, 2019, 05:15:18 PM »
I know from being on here for years and years that many SOHC4 folks love their dogs. Well we have 4 , all rescues.  This morning I came down to find our Jack Russell lifeless in our back yard. My wife got up about 7am to feed them and open the dog door . Our pack is stable but our 40/50 lb mutt did harass the J.R. a few times in our presence . I presume that dog killed the little one. Just a small puncture wound on his neck so I think he was shook vigorously and it broke his neck. I'm beyond upset. Now what ?

Hate to say it, but if you are pretty sure that the big guy killed him you should put him down. You don't know if he will go after another or a small child.

Watch him closely for any more aggressiveness. Sorry to hear, though decision.

Thanks jgger… I also wonder how much my wife totally  ' loving' that dog had to do with the situation. She allowed that dog to ' dominate' her and lick her face in bed all the time .

i'm so sorry to hear that, i'm glad i've never had to face that situation, like it says below maybe keep an eye on the big one

we're lucky, none of our giant breeds ( great danes and a wolfhound )  have ever had a bad word to say to little dogs, they're even scared of the cats

all the best to you and mrs spanner and i hope it all gets better from here on
i blame Terry

Thanks Spotty... we've only had one dog from a puppy and she is completely chill, the rest?, we don't know their history but got them grown as rescues .

3 of our danes and the wolfie were rescues so we never really knew what we were getting ( apart from fcuking huge that is), we've been very lucky

the only time i've ever seen any of them fire up was when the really big male dane got attacked, the two girls went straight to his defence and left the attacker in no doubt as to what he would get should he come back...he didn't
i blame Terry

You mentioned the big one that may have been responsible is a mutt. What combination of breeds do you think it is ?  How old is it ?

If you want to keep that dog, don't get another till he lives out his days.
And keep him on leash around other dogs and kids..

Update:  We took the little dogs remains to the Ag. Center where they autopsy all kinds of wildlife and test them for disease etc., but you can bring your deceased pet and for $105 they will determine the cause of death. My only question to the Dr. ( Vet ) was whether his neck was broken by violent shaking back and forth as dogs do to prey. Often called 'ragdolling'. The answer was yes. It's very hard to know that one of your otherwise placid dogs could do this to another pack member. Who really knows what goes on in their minds :(.  My wife is very resistant to put the dog down, but I'm not sure I can live with the liability if she were to get out and attack some dog getting walked on our street.... decisions.
The black dog was the perp :(  (right )

yeah very sad,its a very tough decision to have to make, years ago our big black lab/shepherd shook the little dog over the road and it lost an eye,we gave it away to a mate with a gas station as a guard dog, sadly it got out one night and was killed on the road, you might be able to spare its life and give it away?
