I am a dumbass...but only temporarily
« on: June 07, 2019, 06:38:00 PM »
Hours of work ruined because I didn't make sure my tank was stable on the table where it was sitting while I did a valve adjustment. The results are below.

And naturally not a relatively easy to find K tank,  oh no, a rare as hen's teeth rust  free F tank.  Still going to Gilmore tomorrow. Next week I try to find a body shop that can get the worst of the dents out and then repaint.

No consolation but I left a multi thousand dollar aluminum cylinder head standing on end in a parts wash tank and walked away to get a brush. Yup right onto the floor. Dented in a hopefully non critical area. Sh it happens.

Ouch Danny! That had to be crushing.  Hope you can find another tank or are able to fix that one without too much expense. Check with Pat in Toledo to see if he has a good tank...he might surprise you.

Yoiks.  Gotta be like a punch in the gut.  Sorry to see.  Looks like a job for a body shop with a stud gun.  That should work for pulling the dents out.

I would look into the paintless debt (DENT, stupid predictive text :o ) repair first, might just get lucky.

Sorry to hear of your demise,  I think we have all been there to some extent or another.🥺

So, after 20 years of careful preservation of my Stock 74 CB550 tank. The folding tv table I routinely used to hold the tank next to bike while synching carbs, collapsed.  Same set up as used dozens of times on my bikes.   But, never with a full tank of gas.  Big mark on the forehead from the palm slap.  Small dents in the tank, but still, aarrgh.

Think that scenario is worse or better than a freshly painted tank?

I understand the pain. It is too easy to damage the bike by mistake. A few sec is enough...

Many bike tanks have been damaged much worse than that,  rider and rest of the bike included.
No insurance that will help to cover?

Your not a dumbass Danny. Your just living proof that sometimes bad things can happen to good people. Chin up though I am sure it was a major disappointment after all your hard work. We all have a story like that of somekind, some just more willing to share.

Hit Harbour Freight for a stud gun. Got the dents mostly out, the rest can be done with filler. I am stripping the rest of the top and sides of the tank. I should have the filler done and a layer of primer before I go home tonight.

I went after all the dents on the tank, not just the ones I was responsible for.  First coat of filler down.

:o :( :( :'( Hopefully repair won't cost too much.

It's going to cost about $200, $100 for the debt removal stud gun I bought and about $100 for paint,  clear coat, and supplies.
