Neutral Light Stays On (dimmed) while in gear
« on: June 30, 2019, 04:33:21 PM »
Dear Fellows,

I know there are few threads regarding this issue, but I would still like to hear what you think:

When in neutral, light is bright green.

When in gear, light is dimmed, but is on.

What I have done:

Checked wires first:
1. Disconnected socket that goes from the alternator to wire harness - light went OFF.
2. Disconnected wire that comes from alternator harness to the neutral switch - light went OFF.

So it must be the neutral switch. Took the neutral switch out, checked continuity.

When the ball is unpressed - beep from the multimeter - continuity.
When the ball is pressed inside - no continuity (didnt check the resistance)

Ok, I said, lets put it back and see if it will work, since the switch seems to be working.

Put the neutral switch all the way in - there is no gap between the switch and the clutch box.

Checked - the light went off in first gear, but then again went dim on second, and dim on first again.

Checked continuity of the switch while on bike:
When in neutral - beep - continuity.
When in gear - no beep, but the resistance is 82 Ohms.

Do you know what is the healthy resistance for the switch?
Is the switch bad and needs to be replaced?

P.S. the main wire harness and alternator harness were replaced. The issues was present before the harnesses were replaced.

Same problem with K7 750. All the suggestions here (there are many) haven't worked for my bike.

On the Goldwing it's decided carbon build up on the switches causes it. Some guys temporarily wire a tail light bulb inline with it to add some amps and burn off the carbon.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

I soaked my switch in kerosene for a day or so, and snapping it closed/open/ closed"
more or less cycling it manually whenever I thought about it. Must have been varnished, as it has worked fine since. It acted the same as yours seems to.

Hey Yarburdin, ever get this sorted out? I’ve got the same problem with my ‘76. It seems to be an intermittent issue but man is it annoying when it happens.

On my K4 once I had a problem with the neutral light being bright green like normal when it neutral but being on dimly sometimes when in gear. I drive with the brights on the headlight and discovered that there was a hole burned through the side of the black plastic bulb holder on the idiot light dash and the high beam indicator light bulb was 'bleeding' through into the neutral light compartment. A dab of black rtv patched and fixed the melted through hole. Something to check maybe.
