Project Dirt Rat
« on: August 04, 2019, 08:17:12 am »
Hello, quick breakdown of progress to date on my 1974 CB750K4.

Picked up the bike on craigslist for $600, came with some great parts, and a shortly discovered failing 2nd gear.

-Dyna coils
-Mac 4 into 1 exhaust
-GL1000 forks
-New Battery

Put some knobby tires on the bike, it has a 16" rear wheel. fabbed up a cafe style hoop for the seat. welded the stock rear blinker mounts back onto the frame.

Sanded down the tank to find bondo on one side, so got that all off and took a hammer to the other side of tank to make space for my knees. let it rust for a few days and sprayed it with clear coat. Used the MAC headers and made a custom muffler with minimal baffles. I also made a seat with open cell foam that acted like a sponge, but ripped around with no 2nd gear like this for the summer!

Pulled the motor and cracked the case over the winter to get a look at the blown 2nd gear. adjusted the valves and replaced gaskets as I went.

Ordered new race cut gears and dogs from Cycle X, great product and super fast shipping. Swapped out the points system for an electronic ignition.

added some cheap rear coil overs from 4into1.com to replace the basically frozen set that was on there. finished heat wrap on the exhaust. added LED plate lights. Built closed cell foam seat. cheap universal taillight. new chain and sprocket, geared pretty low.

Second gear hooks and stays now!

Sewing the leather for the seat was by far the hardest part of the build. I messed up multiple times and spent about two weeks trying to get it looking presentable.

Things got weird when i found this Arthur Fulmer front fairing on craigslist for $35!
It was a frame mount fairing, and my idea was to mount it to the forks. So I decided to chop up this beauty, RIP, to make it work. Also wanted some audio so threw in some waterproof 6.5" speakers. My fiberglass work is not great, but this bike was not built to look perfect..
