Fuel Tank Emblem Attachment Options
« on: August 08, 2019, 08:04:42 AM »
Hey all,
I've been working on my tank (finally), and decided to refinish my Honda emblems.

Now I need to reattach them. I've seen a lot of people suggest 3M tape or epoxy. Is there a reason no one seems to buy the OEM clips?

Usually because the pins are broken off the back, if they are still good use the clips.

Mine has the pins, but I'm not sure if they are damaged or anything. Should there be any kind of rounded end, taper, etc. that helps them stay in the clips? Theres one clip left on my tank, but the pin moves in and out freely. Can't see if the clip is bent/broken though.

The pins have bits on outside to clip into hole and on the inside to grip pin on badge, they can get distorted and loose when prying badge off.
I would fit new pins with a small amount of tape in the middle as belt and braces.

I did the emblems on my F3 tank too. Are the posts missing from the back? I just pressed mine back into the holes on the tank and it worked just fine over the 2,000 miles I rode on my trip last month.

The holes you push the pins in tom need to have the tiny split flanged bushing installed, 2 per side.

Both emblems have to pegs on the back, but I wasnt sure if they had any shaping on the end to help retain them.

I ordered a set of clipy-thingy-ma-whatchamacallems today.

The posts on mine were straight with no flare or grooves

The “things” you ordered go in the holes in the tank tabs. When you push the pins on the badges, they expand then and make them grip. Sort of like an expanding plug in sheet rock? Mine went in very nicely after I used a small drill bit to clean paint out of the tank tabs.

My K2 tank that had the badge holes covered by 2k putty the last 40 years were rather beaten up where badges sit after cleaning and repainting.  New badges sat a little lose so they got small dots of bathroom silicone where pins enter the clips and here and there. Sit well when cured, no more rattle.

If you have new clips and the pins are good they should snap right in and hold well. Additional 2 sided tape is not needed and, depending on the thickness of the tape, can make the pins not grab well for a poor fit with a gap.
